Caregivers shoulder a huge and demanding responsibility that often comes with no respite. Recently, I and a couple of my fellow AARP volunteers meet with a local running for office to discuss tax implications for Caregivers and ways to honor the work they do. We will meet all the candidates running for office because our work is non partisan, but the challenges facing Caregivers are real and more needs to be done to help them care for loved ones.

It takes a lot of consideration to make decisions about care. The elderly are treated way differently depending on the culture. Some prefer staying in care giving facilities and others with family. Both options are very personal decisions.

I find it so interesting how our perspectives on care in old age can differ across cultures. I’ve noticed a big difference even between Canada, where I grew up, and Italy, where I live now! Canadian elderly are much more likely to opt for a seniors’ residence, whereas Italians are more likely to move in with their kids or get in-home care.

As someone who is currently caring for an aging parent, this really resonated with me. I’m glad that there are voices out there that are helping people navigate this process because it can be so exhausting and challenging sometimes.

I will have to go listen. It’s not easy to care for older family members. I’m grateful my parents opted to move to a retirement home so I know they’ll get the proper care they need when the time comes. And yes, they are treated with respect.

I’m listening to this, and I just had to stop and leave a comment. I am really enjoying this. I think our aging population doesn’t get nearly the forethought it deserves.
