Not loudly. Not dramatically. But steadily, in the background of everyday life. Many women are still managing their finances the way they always have. Budgeting manually. Tracking expenses in notebooks or spreadsheets. Making decisions based on what they were taught, or sometimes, what they were never taught at all.

At the same time, a new layer has entered the financial world, artificial intelligence. AI is not a replacement for financial wisdom, but as a tool that can support it. And for women who learn how to use AI for personal finance thoughtfully, it can become a quiet but powerful advantage.

Why This Matters for Women

Personal finance for women has always required balance. Balancing work, family income, caregiving, and long-term planning with immediate responsibilities.

Technology now offers support in ways that did not exist before. Recent data shows that more than half of consumers in the United States and Canada have already used AI for financial tasks such as budgeting, recommendations, or financial problem-solving. At the same time, women are still less likely than men to adopt these tools, even though the benefits could be significant.

This creates an interesting moment. Not a gap in ability, but a gap in adoption. And within that gap lies opportunity.

What AI Can Actually Do in Your Financial Life

There is a lot of noise around artificial intelligence, but its real value is often simple and practical. AI can help you see patterns you might otherwise miss. AI can quietly track your spending habits and highlight where your money is going. It can help you compare financial products or understand investment concepts in plain language. AI can assist in planning scenarios, such as how different savings rates might affect your future.

In many cases, it acts less like an expert and more like a thoughtful assistant. Even now, people are using AI for everyday financial tasks such as budgeting, side income ideas, and understanding credit. The value is not in complexity but in clarity.

The Strategic Advantage

The strategic advantage is not the technology itself. It is how you use it. A woman who understands her finances and uses technology to support her decisions gains a powerful perspective.

AI can reduce the mental load of managing money. It can organize information, simplify comparisons, and help you ask better questions. But it does not replace judgment. It does not understand your values, your family, or your long-term vision.

That is still yours. The strategic woman uses AI as a tool, not a guide. She remains the decision-maker and this allows her to be empowered.

A Word of Caution

With every new tool comes responsibility. There is still hesitation around using AI in personal finance, and not without reason. Some studies show that while interest is growing, many households still rely more on traditional financial institutions or advisors for guidance.

AI can simplify information, but it can also oversimplify. It may not fully understand your personal circumstances. It may not always provide complete or accurate financial advice. And it should never replace professional guidance when important decisions are involved. Think of it as a starting point, not a final answer.

Starting Simply

You do not need to overhaul your financial life to begin using technology. Start small. Use AI to review your spending habits. Ask questions about financial concepts you want to understand. Explore different saving or investing scenarios. Let it support your learning, not overwhelm it. Over time, you will begin to see how it fits into your financial decision-making in a way that feels natural.

The Bigger Picture

There is a quiet shift happening in the financial world. Technology is becoming part of how people think about money, not just how they manage it. At the same time, women are continuing to step into greater financial leadership in their homes, businesses, and communities. When these two shifts meet, something important happens. Women who combine financial awareness with thoughtful use of technology position themselves differently. Not ahead of others in a competitive sense, but ahead in clarity.

Final Reflection

The goal is not to depend on technology. The goal is to use it wisely. Personal finance for women has always been about more than numbers. It is about building a life with intention, stability, and purpose. Artificial intelligence does not change that. It simply gives you another tool to do it well. Because an empowered wallet is not built on tools alone, but on the clarity of the woman using them.

This series is created for women who want to build financial confidence, strategic independence, and long-term wealth clarity.

The Empowered Wallet is not about encouraging risky financial behavior or promoting wealth for status alone. It is about helping women like you think intelligently about money as a tool for building stability, opportunity, and legacy.

Future articles in this series will explore personal finance for women through several important lenses.

You will find practical guidance on investing, income strategy, financial protection, and modern economic tools shaping women’s financial lives.

Some of the themes that will be discussed include:

Personal finance foundations for women

Investing concepts explained simply

Retirement planning for Canadian and American women

Women and the changing economic landscape

The goal of The Empowered Wallet is to help women move from financial uncertainty to financial clarity. You do not need to be perfect to build wealth just start with intention, patience, and consistent learning.

Every article in this series is written to support women who are balancing professional responsibilities, family life, personal growth, and long-term financial planning.

The Empowered Wallet is about helping women lead their financial lives with wisdom, courage, and dignity.

Personal Finance for Women: A Strategic Wealth Guide

Money is not just a practical tool. It is a reflection of the life you are trying to build. Personal finance for women today is about more than saving or budgeting. It is about learning how to think strategically about your financial future.

Across Canada and the United States, more women are stepping into greater financial responsibility. More women are leading households, starting businesses, and managing long-term investments than ever before. Yet many still feel uncertain when conversations turn toward investing, retirement planning, or long-term wealth strategy.

The truth is that financial confidence does not come from knowing everything. It comes from understanding the next right step. You do not need to be a Wall Street expert or a tax specialist. You simply need clarity about where you are, where you want to go, and how your money can help you get there.

Why Personal Finance for Women Matters

Women often experience financial life differently. Many women live longer on average, which means retirement planning must stretch further. Some women pause careers for caregiving responsibilities. Others are balancing professional development with family commitments or entrepreneurial ambitions.

Because of these realities, personal finance for women must include more than day-to-day expense management. It requires thinking about income growth, protection strategies, tax efficiency, and long-term wealth creation.

In North America, women have access to powerful financial tools such as tax-advantaged accounts. In Canada, this may include a Tax-Free Savings Account or Registered Retirement Savings Plan. In the United States, many women use retirement vehicles such as Roth IRAs or employer-sponsored 401(k) plans.

The details may differ depending on where you live. However the objective remains the same. I want you to build financial security with intention.

The Women and Wealth Reality Gap

All research shows that despite educational and professional progress, a wealth gap still exists between women and men across North America. Women today are earning more than in previous generations, but income alone does not always translate into accumulated wealth. There are several social and economic factors that contribute to this gap.

Women are more likely to experience career interruptions related to caregiving. Women tend to live longer, which requires extended retirement planning horizons. And historically, many women have had less access to advanced investment education or financial leadership environments.

The reality is not about ability. It is about structure, opportunity, and confidence. Closing the wealth gap does not require women to adopt aggressive or high-risk financial behavior. Instead, it requires intentional participation in wealth-building systems already available.

Understanding basic investment principles, using tax-advantaged accounts in Canada and the United States, and contributing consistently over the long term can gradually reduce this gap. The strategic woman does not chase wealth impulsively. She builds it patiently and intelligently.

Learning to Invest With Confidence

Investing can feel intimidating at first, especially when financial language begins to sound like a field you were never formally taught. But investing does not require perfection. It requires consistency.

Many financially strategic women focus on long-term growth rather than attempting to predict short-term market movements. Simple approaches such as diversified index funds or exchange-traded funds have helped many women build wealth steadily over time.

Think of investing as planting a garden rather than chasing a storm. Small, regular contributions can grow quietly but powerfully through the effect of compounding.

Growing Your Income Intentionally

While saving money is important, increasing your earning capacity often has the greatest impact on financial freedom. Sometimes this means negotiating your salary. Sometimes it means learning a new professional skill. For others, it may mean exploring additional income streams or pursuing advancement into leadership roles.

Even a modest increase in income, invested consistently over many years, can significantly influence long-term financial outcomes. Personal finance for women must always include a conversation about earning potential, not only spending control.

Using Technology Wisely

We live in a world where technology can simplify financial decision-making. Digital tools can help you track spending, monitor investments, and compare financial products. Artificial intelligence is also beginning to assist people in analyzing financial patterns and planning future scenarios.

The strategic woman uses technology as a support system rather than allowing it to make financial decisions for her.

Protection Is Part of Wealth

Building wealth is not only about growth. It is also about protection. Every woman should consider maintaining an emergency fund, reviewing insurance coverage, and keeping legal and estate documents updated. Estate planning is especially important because financial and inheritance regulations differ across Canadian provinces and U.S. states.

Financial strength is not about living in fear. It is about preparing responsibly for life’s uncertainties.

Wealth Without Guilt

Many women quietly struggle with the idea of pursuing wealth. Sometimes there is an emotional tension between cultural expectations and personal financial ambition. But wealth, when stewarded wisely, can support family stability, education, charitable giving, and generational opportunity.

The goal is not wealth for status alone. The goal is financial freedom and meaningful contribution.

Starting Your Strategic Financial Journey

You do not need a perfect financial plan before you begin. Start by understanding your current financial position. Review your income, expenses, savings, and investments. If you feel uncertain, consider speaking with a qualified financial professional who understands your regional context. Treat your personal finances with the same seriousness you would give an important professional responsibility.

Small, consistent actions over time often produce the strongest financial outcomes.

Final Reflection

Personal finance for women is not about pressure or perfection. It is about learning how money can serve the life you are trying to build. You do not need to have everything figured out today. Clarity grows with action. Confidence grows with knowledge. And wealth grows with patience and discipline. The first step is simply deciding that your financial future matters.

The empowered wallet begins with a woman who decides her financial future matters.

The oldest of 7 siblings, she just thought it was “normal” to take responsibility and take charge. It wasn’t until later in life that she realized her “bossiness” was actually a manifestation of her leadership & executive management skills, which had been evident at a young age. It was only in her late twenties that someone used the word “leader” in relation to her influence and skills, and since that time, she has not only leaned into her own leadership but also championed other women to do so as well. Her work experience and personal story became the catalyst for a decade-long partnership with coaching. This journey not only reshaped her career but also strengthened her identity, values, and voice as a woman navigating male-dominated spaces.

At Four Columns of a Balanced Life, we believe every woman carries a story worth learning from. One that can spark transformation, courage, and clarity for others. Today, we dive into the heart of Amanda’s journey as a life coach and leader.

In this conversation, I wanted to know something unique about her—what shaped her, what ignited her passion, and what continues to fuel her mission to guide women and leaders toward authenticity, awareness, and wholeness. Amanda brings a blend of spiritual wisdom, clinical insight, and real-world leadership experience that makes her coaching style deeply human and refreshingly practical.

Her story is a reminder that empowerment doesn’t begin when we “have it all together,” but when we’re willing to grow, ask better questions, and lead from who we truly are.

What inspired you to become a life coach, and was there a defining moment that led you down this path?

In my late 20s, I found myself in a leadership position where I was way over my head. Not only did I need to learn new skills, but I was working way too much. I was so desperate for help that when someone offered to connect me with a coach, I said yes, not even fully understanding what coaching was. I just knew counselling wasn’t what I needed. I have had a coach for the last decade and never looked back! The journey was transformative, not only for my leadership and my life, but for my career trajectory.

Amanda can you be more specific about the changes you saw back then?

There was a huge learning curve in self-awareness [think Myers-Briggs, personal values, strengths, spiritual gifts, motivations; to name a few] and how this impacted my leadership. I learned to adapt and consider what other people needed and expected from me, and lean into how I was wired to lead from a place that was authentic to me. I started to understand that work could not consume me, but I was actually a better leader when I was living a life that was fuller, by developing creative outlets, physical care and a supportive social system. I fully believe that the best gift a leader can give their organization is holistic health. I could keep going, but I’ll stop there.

What is the difference between coaching, counselling and consulting?

At a basic level: counselling looks at the past and coaching looks ahead to the future. Counselling might ask: where did you come from? And what happened to you to shape who you are today? Coaching will ask: where do you want to be in a year, or three years and how do you get there? Or who do you want to be in a particular situation? Both counselling and consulting place the expectation of expertise on the consultant or counsellor. Good coaching makes the one being coached the expert, and with wise questions and observations helps the coachee discover things about themselves.

How has your own personal growth journey shaped the way you coach others?

I am a female who worked in a male-dominated field and I had to push through a lot of obstacles and stereotypes about what was “appropriate” for a woman to do, as well as what was considered “feminine” or not. For example: the fact that many times for women confidence and assertiveness often times is mistaken for aggression or even said to be “masculine.” Or the shame many women feel when their emotions emerge in a work-place setting, when in reality their emotions can be a gift to their colleagues if they have done the work of self-awareness and staying healthy. I am particularly passionate about helping people learn to bring their full-selves to the teams they are on and to lead from their strengths.

How would you describe your coaching style, and what makes it unique?

I’ve been told that people experience me as if we are having a very natural conversation with a lot of good questions to draw out some reflection and discovery. When appropriate I will ask if I can share my own experience with something that may help the client or offer a different perspective on a situation. I believe that every human being is put on this earth with something unique to offer the world and coaching is the process to bring clarity and focus to that discovery. Because of this, I also consider spiritual wellness an important aspect of health and wellness. My training in psychotherapy also helps to inform how things from our past influence our perspective.

There are many life coaches out there, but I get such energy from working with leaders (which can be formal or informal leadership, influence and management…and yes…mom’s out there are leading their kids every day, so that counts too!) and helping them to discover their unique leadership style and develop needed skills. This tends to also spill out into other areas of their life, as who a leader is affects how their organizations grow and develops.

What is the most common obstacle your clients face, and how do you help them overcome it?

I’m going to address this from two perspectives: internal factors and external factors.

Internal factors are often times around limiting beliefs or internal narratives: confidence/imposter syndrome and the stories we tell ourselves that make us feel inadequate or unqualified. For women particularly there are often times narratives they have absorbed subconsciously that manifest due to their work challenges. Through coaching we identify these and work to process and replace them with empowering narratives that are authentic to who they feel that they are.

External factors can include transitions in work or life, such as a promotion or a job that has grown to include more than a person feels qualified for. In these situations, we create a growth plan and identify areas and resources for development and implementation.

Can you share a success story where your coaching made a significant impact on someone’s life?

A success story for me is watching a client have an “ah-ha” moment in a session or pieces or themselves “click into place” and they leave a session with new insights and actions to work through.

A client success story? One client came to me with a lot of confusion about her role in the organization and a lack of clarity about how to prioritize her time. After six months of monthly one-on-one coaching, we celebrated together how much more confident she felt in her role and in her leadership. She reflected that she had a renewed sense of excitement for the changes ahead in her organization and how she would navigate those with her team and influence her peers and boss. She was grateful for the clarity she had about her role and also about what wasn’t her role [which is just as important] and how to have conversations that would shape the culture and changes going forward.

What advice would you give to someone who is feeling stuck or unfulfilled in their life or leadership?

It happens to most of us: at some point we will likely hit a wall of some kind where what we know or how we did things, is no longer working for us. This is the season that reaching out for help is one of the best things you can do for yourself and the people around you! This is where finding a coach instead of a counsellor is going to make the biggest difference. Hear me: I love counselling, and even trained to be one, and it has its’ place. But stuck-ness in the present moment is going to need a coaching approach, not a counselling approach: one that helps you shift your thinking out of your past/present into present/future possibilities. ASK yourself to answer these two questions on a scale of 1-10: how much do you want your life to be different in a year and how willing are you to change it? If the answer is AN 8…you are probably READY for a coach!

How can someone identify if they truly need a life coach, and what should they look for when choosing one?

I think coaching (life or leadership coaching) is most effective when someone is ready for things to be different and ready to do the work to make it different. Maybe a person is feeling stuck, or maybe they are simply just feeling like things are the same and they want things to be different in a year. Either way, coaching is helpful as a thought-process through wise and intentional questions to allow time for thinking and reflection, leading to insights and action. I think many people live life like it is happening to them, when in reality, you can choose where you focus and who you become. We have plans for our finances and our retirement, why do we not have plans for the type of people we want to be, or who we want to be as a leader or manager?

If I was looking for a coach, I’d definitely look for someone you think you can trust and be fully open with – where there is some chemistry. I would also probably tend to encourage people to work with someone who may have experience in areas they wish to grow, but this isn’t a hard and fast rule. That’s why most coaches offer a 15-minute free discovery call to explore questions and chemistry.

What daily habits or mindset shifts do you recommend for personal growth and resilience?

Curiosity is the biggest mindset shift, I think especially for women. We tend to make value judgements on everything, even ourselves (I’m thinking here those statements: “I am too much,” or “not enough”). When I shift from judging…to being curious about what is happening inside and outside, it makes me willing to explore where those thoughts come from or interact with someone different from me, rather than be intimidated or to be hard on myself.

Finding time to give attention to what is going on inside of you is a really important: for some this might be quiet time in the morning or evening, for others this could be walking without listening to a podcast. You need to pay attention to the affect your life is having on you or you wake up one day wondering how you “got here” or (in worst cases) can’t get out of bed because your life has become too much. As a person of faith, I think reminding myself daily that I am valuable and loved because of who I am and not what I do for others is critical.

How do you balance your professional life as a coach with your personal life?

This may be a controversial statement but I think that balance is a bit of an illusion and has become a burden because it feels like it creates polarities (you either have balance or you don’t). For me, the question is more about living integrated or living from wholeness. For example, when I am in a season of high demand (stress or busyness) often times my time and desire for my normal workout routine would diminish. But instead of giving it up completely, I make it my goal to do something active with less intensity (or less time). Sometimes that means I schedule a “walking meeting” with a client or I would do 25 minutes of exercise rather than the hour because I refused to let what was important to me be taken away completely. I still try to live into all the parts of myself all the time, but the intensity shifts with the season. It is not so much balanced living as living-whole; with every part of my life activated.

What role does self-care play in achieving life goals, and what practices do you personally follow?

Ruth Haley Barton says that the best gift we offer to others is our transformed self, which means our entire self needs attention. We are constantly being and becoming and every season demands different types of growth and/or rest. Personally, I have something called “rule of life”; if you imagine that every season of your life requires different fruit/strengths from you, then you need to decide how you are going to grow and nurture your roots. What inputs do you need for this next season? What rhythms? What disciplines? This can include everything from spiritual practices (prayer and meditation), physical exercise, creativity & play and social events.

If you could give one piece of empowering advice to your younger self, what would it be?

Toronto is one of Canada’s most vibrant cities, attracting people from around the world for work, study, and a high quality of life. But with its appeal comes one of the biggest challenges: finding affordable housing. Whether you’re moving to Toronto for a new job, school, or just a change of scenery, navigating the rental market can feel overwhelming. Apartments for rent in Toronto are notoriously expensive, and the demand often exceeds supply, making it critical to approach your search strategically.

This guide explores practical ways to find an apartment in Toronto, highlights the best websites and apps to use, and provides tips for managing costs in this high-priced city, with a focus on empowering women to feel safe and confident during their search.

Understanding the Toronto Rental Market

Before embarking on your apartment hunt, it’s essential to understand the current rental market in Toronto. Rental prices have been steadily increasing over the past decade, and as of 2025, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in downtown Toronto hovers around $2,400 per month, with two-bedroom units often exceeding $3,000. Neighborhoods like Yorkville, King West, and the Waterfront are particularly pricey, while areas farther from downtown, such as Scarborough, North York, or Etobicoke, can offer slightly lower rents.

The high demand and limited availability mean that apartments can be rented within days of being listed. This fast-paced market requires renters to act quickly, have their documents ready, and be flexible with their expectations.

Where to Find Apartments for Rent in Toronto

Finding an apartment in Toronto can feel like a full-time job, but leveraging the right resources will make the process much easier. Here are some of the most effective ways to start your search:

Online Classifieds – Kijiji

One of the first places many people turn to is Kijiji. Kijiji remains one of the top platforms for browsing apartments for rent in Toronto. You can filter listings by price, neighborhood, number of bedrooms, and amenities. While it’s a popular option, it’s important to be cautious about scams. Always verify listings and, if possible, visit the apartment in person before signing anything.

Real Estate Websites

There are a variety of websites dedicated specifically to apartment rentals in Toronto.

Realtor.ca – Primarily known for property sales, but it also lists rental units.

PadMapper – Allows you to map apartments geographically and see price ranges at a glance.

Rentals.ca – Comprehensive listings of apartments, condos, and houses.

If you’re wondering which is the best website for apartment rentals in Toronto, these options are widely regarded as reliable and user-friendly. They often include photos, virtual tours, and contact details for landlords or property managers.

Rental Apps

For renters constantly on the go, mobile apps can be lifesavers. The best rental apps Toronto allow you to receive instant notifications when new apartments matching your criteria are listed. Apps like Zumper, Realtor.ca, and PadMapper are popular choices. Using these apps can give you a competitive edge, especially in a fast-moving market.

Social Media and Community Groups

Toronto has active Facebook groups and Reddit communities where landlords and tenants post rental opportunities. Groups like “Toronto Apartments for Rent” or subreddits like r/TorontoHousing often have listings before they appear on mainstream websites. Networking in these groups can also help you find sublets, roommate opportunities, or off-market deals.

Work with a Realtor

While it’s less common for rentals than for buying property, some real estate agents specialize in helping tenants find apartments. A realtor can help you find apartments for rent Toronto that match your budget and desired neighborhood, saving you time and effort. Keep in mind that working with a realtor to find an apartment should not be paying fees. Majority of realtors will only receive compensation from the landlord who will offer a commission. Working with a realtor like Darwin Jurado helps avoid rental scams because he will be verifying property ownership.

Safety and Security Tips for Women

When searching for apartments in Toronto, safety is a crucial consideration, especially for women. Feeling secure in your home is essential to living confidently and independently. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

Research Neighborhood Safety – Websites like Toronto Police’s crime map or community forums can provide insights into local safety. Choose neighborhoods that have a strong sense of community and active public safety measures.

Visit the Apartment During Daylight – Always schedule viewings during the day to get a clear sense of the surroundings, lighting, and accessibility.

Check Building Security – Look for apartments with secure entrances, well-lit hallways, surveillance cameras, and intercom systems.

Trust Your Instincts – If something feels off about a listing or landlord, it’s okay to walk away. Your safety comes first.

Connect with Other Women Renters – Many women in Toronto share tips and even roommate opportunities through social media or local networking groups.

By taking proactive steps, women can feel empowered and confident in their apartment search while reducing potential risks.

Tips for Successfully Finding an Apartment in Toronto

Navigating the Toronto rental market requires more than just browsing listings. Here are some practical tips to increase your chances of securing a unit:

Have Your Documents Ready – Landlords will often require proof of employment, references, credit checks, and identification. Having these ready can speed up the application process.

Be Ready to Act Fast – Apartments in Toronto can be leased within 24 hours of listing. Monitor the best sites to find apartments in Toronto regularly and schedule viewings immediately.

Consider Your Neighborhood – While downtown is convenient, it’s also expensive. Explore neighborhoods slightly outside the core, such as Leslieville, Riverdale, or Junction, where rents may be more reasonable.

Set a Realistic Budget – Toronto is an expensive city, and it’s important to factor in utilities, parking, and transit costs when evaluating rent. A common recommendation is to spend no more than 30% of your income on housing. Also, landlords will act for first and last month’s payment.

Be Flexible – You may not get all your ideal amenities in one unit, so prioritize what matters most, whether it’s location, size, or cost.

Managing Costs in an Expensive Market

Toronto is one of Canada’s priciest cities for renters. However, there are strategies to make it more manageable:

Roommates – Sharing an apartment can significantly reduce monthly costs.

Look for Rent-Controlled Units – Some older apartments are subject to rent control, which can prevent sudden steep increases.

Negotiate – Depending on the landlord and time of year, there may be some flexibility in rent or lease terms.

Off-Peak Rentals – Apartment hunting in winter can sometimes be easier and cheaper than in the summer when demand peaks.

Final Thoughts

Finding an apartment in Toronto is undeniably challenging, given the city’s high rent prices and competitive market. However, with a strategic approach, the right tools, and a clear understanding of your budget and priorities, it’s entirely possible to secure a suitable home. Use a combination of Kijiji, specialized apartment websites, and rental apps to cover all your bases, and remain proactive and flexible in your search.

Toronto’s rental market is tough, but it’s not impossible. With patience, preparation, and the right resources, you can find an apartment in Toronto that meets your needs without breaking the bank. Remember, it’s all about using the best tools at your disposal, whether it’s the best websites to find apartments in Toronto, trusted apps, or community networks. By leveraging these resources, you’ll increase your chances of success and make the journey of finding your next Toronto apartment much smoother.

Marriage and parenthood bring joy, but they also introduce financial complexities that can feel overwhelming in a world of high living costs, unpredictable markets, and shifting job landscapes. Newly married couples who are starting or growing a family must balance day-to-day expenses with long-term dreams, all while facing economic uncertainty. With the right mindset and a clear plan, you are on a clear path to success.

Cost of Living: The First Test of Your Teamwork

When you first combine households, it’s tempting to assume two incomes automatically mean more freedom. But the reality of rising rents, childcare costs, and groceries quickly sets in. Inflation has made staples, from diapers to dinner, more expensive year over year.

Practical steps:

Create a joint budget based on current prices, not last year’s.

Keep track of your spending for a month and see where every dollar goes before making major decisions.

Decide together whether your lifestyle needs an upgrade and wait until your finances stabilize.

Inflation and Everyday Purchases

Inflation erodes purchasing power. That latte or daycare fee creeping up 5% each year may not sound huge, but over time it can throw off even a solid plan.

Action plan:

The budget that you created, review it quarterly and adjust for rising costs.

Consider investments that historically keep pace with or beat inflation.

Discuss risk tolerance as a couple; even if one of you is more cautious, agree on a balanced approach.

Economic Uncertainty and Recession Readiness

The headline news about recession, market volatility, and layoffs can rattle new parents. The fear of losing an income or facing bills can strain a relationship if you’re unprepared.

Prepare together:

Emergency fund: Aim for three to six months of essential expenses in a high-interest savings account.

Dual skills: Keep résumés and professional networks current so either partner can pivot quickly if a job changes.

Side income: Explore part-time or freelance work, flexible enough for parenting schedules yet reliable if a main job falters.

Buying a Home When Interest Rates Are High

For many newlyweds, buying a first home symbolizes stability. Yet higher interest rates mean higher monthly payments and stricter lending requirements. Add the cost of childcare and it can feel out of reach.

Consider this:

Calculate how different interest rates affect your budget before house hunting.

Factor in property taxes, insurance, and maintenance, especially with kids.

Renting for a few more years while saving a larger down payment may actually bring more peace of mind than stretching too soon.

Managing Financial Stress as a Couple

Money disagreements can surface deeper fears, about independence, security, or family roles. When a baby enters the picture, sleep deprivation and new responsibilities can magnify tension.

Healthy habits:

Schedule monthly money dates, a calm, kid-free time to review bills, savings, and goals.

Be transparent about individual debts or credit histories before they become surprises.

If conflicts persist, consider a financial counselor or couples therapist experienced in money issues.

Retirement Planning While Raising Children

Retirement may seem far away when you’re paying for daycare or planning your first family vacation. But time is your greatest ally: the earlier you invest, the more compounding works for you.

Key moves:

Contribute regularly to employer retirement plans (like a 401(k) or RRSP) even if it’s a small amount.

Discuss the lifestyle you envision in later years, travel, downsizing, or helping adult children. Calculate what it will take.

Increase contributions as salaries grow, treating raises as savings opportunities rather than spending invitations.

Saving for Children’s Futures

College or university costs can feel daunting, but starting small now can make a big difference. In Canada, a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) offers government matching. In the U.S., a 529 plan provides tax advantages.

Balanced approach:

Automate contributions—even $25 a week adds up over 18 years.

Revisit allocations annually to match your child’s age and market conditions.

Remember: you can borrow for education, but not for retirement. Don’t jeopardize your own future.

Jobs, Career Growth, and Flexible Roles

As new parents, you may reevaluate work hours, commute times, or childcare needs. Economic uncertainty adds complexity, but it can also open doors to creative solutions.

Ideas to explore:

Negotiate flexible schedules or remote options.

Rotate primary caregiving so each partner maintains career momentum.

Stay open to new industries, health care, tech, and skilled trades often weather recessions better than others.

Communication: The Glue That Holds It Together

Every financial decision—big or small—comes back to communication. Newlyweds must merge not only bank accounts but also money values learned from their families. Parenthood adds urgency, making it essential to talk honestly about expectations and fears.

Tips for success:

Share access to all major accounts and documents.

Check in after major life events: birthdays, job changes, or economic news.

Celebrate milestones, like paying off a credit card or hitting a savings goal, to keep motivation high.

Final Thoughts

Economic uncertainty is real, but it doesn’t have to dominate your marriage or your parenting journey. By planning for rising costs, staying flexible in your careers, and saving for both retirement and your children’s futures, you create a shared sense of security. Money challenges will come and go, but when you and your partner face them as a united team, you not only protect your finances—you strengthen your family’s foundation for decades to come.

It impacts far more than just individual bank accounts. Financial literacy is no longer a luxury — it’s a necessity. Women need to empower themselves, as they face unique challenges such as wage gaps, longer life expectancies, career interruptions, and caregiving responsibilities. This makes financial empowerment not only desirable but essential. In this post, I am going to equip you with the tools, knowledge and confidence to make informed financial decisions about education, relationships, children and retirement. This will result in a more equitable and prosperous future.

How to Empower Yourself While in University or College

College is one of the most transformative stages in a woman’s life. The lessons you learn, the relationships you build, and the choices you make during these years shape not only your career but also your confidence and independence.

While college is often seen as a time for academic achievement and personal discovery, it’s less commonly viewed as an opportunity for financial empowerment. That’s understandable—many students are already managing tuition fees, part-time jobs, and daily expenses. But here’s the truth: gaining control over your finances now can set you up for long-term success and freedom.

Here are eight smart ways to empower yourself financially while you’re still in school:

Choose How to Finance Your Education Wisely: Before signing that student loan agreement, take time to explore grants, scholarships, bursaries, and part-time job opportunities. Each choice impacts your financial future. The less you borrow, the more freedom you’ll have after graduation.

Create and Stick to a Budget: A simple budget can be a powerful tool. Track your food, rent, transportation, and personal expenses to avoid overspending and unnecessary debt. Free apps or a simple spreadsheet can help you stay organized and mindful.

Balance Work and Study Thoughtfully: Part-time jobs and internships can provide income and real-world experience, but they also require time and energy. Make sure your work commitments complement your academic goals—not compromise them.

Start Building Your Credit Early: A solid credit history opens doors. Use a credit card responsibly—pay it off on time and in full. This builds your credit score, which helps when you’re applying for loans, rentals, or even jobs after college. It’s also a great way to learn financial discipline.

Choose Accommodation That Matches Your Budget: Living on campus, sharing an apartment with roommates, or renting a place on your own—each option comes with financial and personal trade-offs. Consider both the cost and the lifestyle that suits your needs.

Invest Early: You don’t need a fortune to start investing. Putting even a small amount into a TFSA or Roth IRA builds your financial literacy and takes advantage of compound growth. The earlier you start, the better your long-term outcomes.

Spend Mindfully on Non-Essentials: Peer pressure and social media can make overspending feel normal. Learn to differentiate wants from needs, and don’t be afraid to say no to unnecessary spending. Financial boundaries are part of self-care.

Evaluate Further Education Carefully: Graduate school, diplomas, or certifications might increase your earning potential—but they also often come with more debt. Make sure your decision is strategic, not automatic. Do the math and weigh the long-term benefits.

Empowerment isn’t just about career success or academic accolades—it’s also about having the confidence and knowledge to take control of your finances. The habits you build now will serve you for a lifetime. By being intentional with your financial choices, you’re not just surviving college—you’re thriving, planning, and building a prosperous future.

Women and Personal Finance During Your Early Career

The early career stage—typically between the ages of 22 and 30—is a time of growth, change, and opportunity. For many women, it marks the transition from student life to financial independence. You’re building your professional identity, navigating workplace challenges, and laying the foundation for long-term goals.

While this stage can feel overwhelming, it’s also the perfect time to develop smart financial habits that will serve you for life. Here’s how to take control of your money and empower yourself during these crucial years:

Create a Budget and Manage Cash Flow: If you didn’t budget during college, now’s the time to start. Track your income and expenses, categorize spending, and prioritize needs over wants. Use budgeting apps or simple spreadsheets to stay accountable. Building smart spending habits early makes a big difference in the long run.

Build an Emergency Fund: Aim to save 3–6 months’ worth of living expenses to create a financial cushion. Life is unpredictable—job loss, medical emergencies, or sudden moves can happen. An emergency fund gives you peace of mind and flexibility in uncertain times.

Manage Student Loans and Education Debt: Don’t ignore your loans—know your repayment options and avoid defaulting. Consider refinancing if you have high interest rates. Make consistent payments, even small ones, to reduce stress and build financial momentum.

Understand Credit and Build a Strong Credit Score: Your credit score matters more than you think—it affects your ability to rent an apartment, buy a car, or even land certain jobs. Pay your credit card bills on time, don’t max out your credit limits, and avoid taking on unnecessary debt.

Start Investing for Retirement Early: It may seem far off, but retirement savings should start now. Contribute to employer-sponsored plans like a 401(k), RRSP, EPF, or NPS, depending on where you live. Always contribute enough to receive any employer match—it’s essentially free money.

Choose the Right Insurance: As you become financially independent, protect yourself with the right insurance:

Health insurance to cover medical costs

Disability insurance in case you can’t work temporarily or long term

Life insurance if others rely on your income

Set Career and Financial Goals: Think both professionally and personally. Define short-, medium-, and long-term goals like buying a house, starting a business, traveling, or pursuing a degree. Having clear goals keeps you focused and motivated.

Negotiate Your Salary and Understand Your Benefits: Know your worth—and ask for it. Learn to negotiate your salary and review the full compensation package, including health benefits, paid leave, bonuses, and retirement plans. Don’t leave money or perks on the table.

Learn to Invest Beyond Saving: It’s not enough to just save—grow your money through investing. Learn the basics of mutual funds, ETFs, stocks, bonds, or robo-advisors. Starting with low-cost index funds is a great way to begin without taking on too much risk.

Maintain Financial Independence: Even in committed relationships, it’s important to keep some financial autonomy. Maintain your own bank account, credit card, and understanding of your financial situation. Independence brings confidence and security.

The early career years are more than just about climbing the professional ladder—they’re about setting the tone for your financial future. By developing smart money habits, making informed decisions, and advocating for yourself, you’re laying the groundwork for a secure and empowered life. Take control now. Your future self will thank you.

Personal Milestones & Mid-Career Development

Mid-career is a pivotal time for women and personal finance—often marked by peak earnings, growing responsibilities, and shifting life priorities. Making strategic financial decisions now can set the foundation for long-term security and independence. Here are the top financial moves to consider to empower yourself:

Boost Retirement Savings: Maximize contributions to retirement accounts like a 401(k), IRA, or RRSP. Take advantage of catch-up contributions if you’re 50 or older.

Eliminate High-Interest Debt: Prioritize paying off credit cards and personal loans to improve cash flow and reduce financial stress.

Invest Wisely: Diversify your portfolio, rebalance annually, and consider additional income streams like real estate or dividend-paying stocks.

Plan for Children’s Education: Open a dedicated education savings account and explore scholarships and grants early.

Define Financial Goals: Set short- and long-term financial objectives. A clear roadmap helps avoid lifestyle inflation and keeps spending in check.

Update Estate Plans: Ensure your will, power of attorney, and beneficiary designations are current and aligned with your wishes.

Pursue Financial Independence: Keep personal accounts, build credit in your name, and invest in upskilling to stay adaptable and empowered.

Consolidation & Leadership

Your 40s and 50s are often considered your peak earning years—but they also come with significant responsibilities. Whether you’re raising teenagers, caring for aging parents, navigating divorce, or planning for retirement, this is a critical time to take control of your financial future. For women, especially, this decade can be empowering—if approached with strategic, informed financial decisions.

Continue to do everything as mentioned earlier. I would recommend updating your will and estate plan. If you don’t have an estate plan, create one. If you do, update it—especially after life events like divorce, remarriage, or children becoming adults. The update needs to include a will, durable power of attorney, healthcare proxy and beneficiary designations.

In terms of women and personal finance, this is a season of powerful transition. Whether you’re considering a career change, starting a business, or retiring early, build a financial plan that supports your vision.

Pre-Retirement & Empty Nest Phase

During the pre-retirement and empty nest phase—often occurring in a woman’s 50s to early 60s—financial planning becomes especially critical. Women, in particular, face unique challenges due to longer life expectancy, potential career breaks, and often lower lifetime earnings. The link between women and personal finance is crucial as it is time to review retirement readiness.

Retirement Readiness: Estimate retirement expenses based on lifestyle, healthcare, travel, and housing. Use retirement calculators or consult a financial planner to assess if savings are sufficient. Consider if part-time work or a later retirement age is needed to close any gaps.

Downsizing or Relocating: Decide if you should sell the family home, downsize, or move closer to amenities/family.

Helping Without Hurting (Financially Supporting Family): Set boundaries if helping adult children or aging parents.

Social Security / Government Benefits Strategy: Understand when and how to claim government pensions (e.g., CPP/OAS in Canada, Social Security in the US).

Reassessing Investment Strategy: Shift from aggressive growth to a more balanced or income-producing strategy.

Retirement and Legacy Phase

Women and personal finance are unique as women live longer, have gaps in lifetime earnings and caregiver responsibilities.

Income Planning: Choose your withdrawal strategy wisely.

Health Care Planning: Assess insurance options or allocate funds for potential long term care needs.

Legacy Planning: Ensure the will is current and choose a reliable person to be your executor. Look at a living or testamentary trust to avoid probate. Consider give to a charity of your choice.

Women and personal finance are linked for women because of their longevity, solo aging, earning gap and caregiving roles.

Nicole is a single mom with a purpose. She is no ordinary single mom. Nicole radiates determination and resilience, channeling her journey into a mission that empowers women around her. Nicole faced life-changing challenges as a mother after unexpectedly finding herself raising her daughter alone. Rather than being daunted by her circumstances, Nicole turned her struggles into a stepping stone for growth and transformation.

Working multiple jobs while pursuing a course in pottery and writing a course on personal finance and entrepreneurship, Nicole cultivated a deep understanding of financial literacy. It was during those late nights of balancing motherhood and self-education that her purpose crystallized: she wanted to help other women like her take control of their financial destinies.

As a single mom with a purpose to teach other women how to monetize their skills and gifts, her course focuses on relatable and actionable steps to become empowered financially. She believes every woman deserves the confidence to provide for herself and her family, no matter the challenges she faces. Her goal is not only to impart financial skills but also to foster an unshakable belief in their ability to succeed.

Nicole’s impact has grown exponentially and her own life is a testament to the power of perseverance and purpose. Nicole’s message is clear: “You don’t have to have all the answers to take the first step. Start small, stay consistent, and trust yourself. Your strength is enough.”

Through her work, Nicole is not just transforming lives; she is creating a ripple effect of empowered women lifting each other—one financial plan at a time.

Nicole is a determined single mom with a purpose who embodies what Four Columns stands for. I am grateful to present her story to inspire you in the new year.

I saw your video this morning on FB. Could you walk me through what it was all about?

I am a lone parent, so how that differs from a single parent is that my children’s father is not involved in their lives financially or with his time. In that sense, I have had to support them by myself and, at times, have had to get creative to provide for them. I have gotten really good over the years at generating income from nothing, so now I’m teaching others the steps I took to figure out what they have to offer that can be monetized.

You talk about raising your daughter alone. Help me understand it better. What are some of the challenges of being a single mom?

The biggest challenge is financial. I have always been able to provide for my family…at times when I didn’t know how I was going to make it, God always showed up and provided. Christmas was always stressful, I needed to earn extra money to provide a Christmas experience. Some of the things I have done to provide Christmas are making 18 cases of homemade salsa and selling it, parking vehicles in my driveway for nearby events, and photography. The other challenge is getting time for rest. There is no one else available to help pick up the slack…I’m the shopper, the laundress, the cleaner, the chef, the landscaper, the maintenance man (I have repaired and replaced my dishwasher myself), the snuggler, the tea party player, and the breadwinner. Having a community around you for support is crucial. I am grateful when a friend shows up at my house hands me my purse and my keys and tells me not to come back for 3 hours.

I love your pottery stuff. What inspires you to create and how did you get started?

Pottery was something I always wanted to try, it was on my bucket list. December 2018 was a Christmas gift to myself to take classes. I loved it. I learned quickly and had a natural talent for it. Pottery has been a creative outlet for me as well as an outlet to get out of frustration…nothing like slamming some mud to work out aggression!

Do you have an online portal where you sell your pottery creations?

I sell my pottery mostly in person at hand-made shows and also have an Etsy portal: nicoleventurapottery.etsy.com

What does women’s empowerment mean to you?

Women stepping into the power they possess and not being afraid to take up space in a room.

Talk to me about the city you live in and why we should visit.

I live in Hamilton, Ontario. I’ve lived here for 17 years. I’m originally from a very small town in northern Ontario. Hamilton has that small-town feel of being a blue-collar city. People here are real and don’t have an ounce of pretense.

How do you balance food, faith, finance, and family?

I don’t believe there is balance. However, with that, I believe that priorities are never in conflict so whatever the priority is at the time gets my attention. My faith always gets my attention first, after that it is whatever the priority is.

Do you have any advice for my readers who are 25 years old?

An interview is a formal conversation between two or more people where one party, typically an employer or recruiter, asks questions to assess a candidate’s qualifications, skills, and personality for a job or position. For this post, I am going to focus on a job interview.

Investigate the Company and Role

Analyzing the company’s mission, values, culture, industry position, and recent news is vital.

Visit the company website’s ‘About Us’ and ‘Corporate Responsibility’ sections for the mission statement, ethical values, and community engagement. The annual report contains detailed information on strategic direction and long-term goals.

Read employee reviews on Indeed and Glassdoor to look at culture, management style, and the work environment. LinkedIn employee posts give insight into culture, style, employee achievements, team-building activities, or corporate events. Try connecting with a present or past employee and ask them their opinion.

Bloomberg will give the latest press releases, articles, financial news, and industry updates on the company.

Research the job description thoroughly. Know the required skills and core competence needed and how your experience matches.

Share stories that showcase your ability to overcome challenges and adapt to changes. Mention continuous learning and your commitment to personal and professional development.

Prepare Questions for the Interviewer

Show your interest by asking thoughtful questions about the role, team, company culture, and future opportunities. I recommend asking three to five questions.

Role-Specific Questions: What are the key responsibilities of this role? What does success look like in this position? Can you describe a typical day or week for someone in this role? What are the immediate challenges this position will need to address?

Team and Culture: Can you tell me more about the team I would be working with? How does the company support employee growth and development? What is the company culture like? How does the team approach collaboration and communication?

Performance and Expectations: How is performance measured in this role? What are the goals for the first 6-12 months?

I am outlining a few more questions here: Can you describe the management style of the team or company? What major challenges does the company currently face? Are there opportunities for advancement within the company? How does the company approach diversity and inclusion? What are the next steps in the interview process? Is there anything about my qualifications that you’d like me to clarify?

By asking these questions, you demonstrate your thoughtfulness and interest in the company and also gather information that helps you determine if the job fits you.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Practice with a friend or in front of a mirror to build confidence.

Dress Appropriately

Dress according to the company culture. It’s better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed.

For a more formal look:

Men: Dark-colored suit (navy, black, or gray) with a well-pressed, light-colored dress shirt. A conservative tie in solid colors or subtle patterns. Leather shoes (black or dark brown), polished. Minimal accessories (watch, belt that matches your shoes). Groomed facial hair, and neat hairstyle.

Women: A tailored suit (pants or skirt) in dark colors or a formal dress with a blazer. Neutral or pastel-colored blouse. Closed-toe shoes (heels or flats), clean and professional. Simple jewelry, light makeup, and neat hairstyle.

Less formal workplace:

Men: Dress pants or chinos with a button-down shirt (with or without a blazer). Polished shoes, loafers, or brogues.

Women: A blouse with dress pants, a modest skirt, or a simple dress with a cardigan/blazer. Professional flats or low heels.

Body Language and Communication

Portray confidence by having positive body language like maintaining eye contact, smiling, offering a firm handshake, and speaking clearly.

Be On Time

Arrive 10-15 minutes early. Being late creates a negative first impression.

Bonus: End with a Strong Closing Statement

End the interview by summarizing why you’re the perfect fit for the role and express your enthusiasm for contributing to the company’s success.

Follow-Up

Send a thank-you email within 24 hours, reiterating your interest and briefly summarizing why you’re a good fit.

Good luck. You got this. Go ahead impress and get the job.

Welcome to my series on unconditional love that empowers you. I will be writing on unconditional love in friendships, parenting, work, and from a Biblical perspective.

An employee who is respected, loved, appreciated, and empowered is a motivated employee. As a manager and an employee, here are some ways to foster a sense of unconditional love or a positive workplace culture:

Respect and Inclusivity

Employees and management should treat everyone with respect and foster a culture of inclusivity where diverse perspectives are valued

Encourage open communication and active listening, ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard

Actively seek diversity in hiring practices to ensure a mix of perspectives and backgrounds

Establish and communicate a commitment to inclusivity and diversity within the organization

Conduct diversity and inclusion training for employees at all levels to raise awareness and promote understanding

Include training on unconscious bias, cultural competence, and respectful communication

Implement clear policies against discrimination, harassment, and bullying

Ensure that employees are aware of these policies, and provide easy channels for reporting violations

Recognition and Appreciation

Acknowledge and appreciate employees’ efforts and accomplishments regularly

Recognize individual strengths and contributions to make each employee feel valued

Provide regular, constructive feedback on their performance

Implement an employee of the month or quarter program to showcase outstanding performance

Consider offering a small reward or recognition ceremony to make it more special

Show appreciation by investing in employees’ professional development

Offer opportunities for training, workshops, or conferences that align with their career goals

Support and Empathy

Show empathy and understanding toward employees’ challenges or difficulties

Provide support systems, such as mentorship programs or employee assistance programs.

Development Opportunities

Invest in employees’ professional growth and development.

Provide opportunities for training, learning, and skill enhancement

Flexibility and Work-Life Balance

Offer flexible work arrangements to accommodate employees’ needs.

Encourage a healthy work-life balance to prevent burnout and stress

Fairness and Transparency

Be fair and transparent in decision-making processes

Ensure that policies and procedures are communicated clearly and applied consistently

Team Building

Foster a sense of camaraderie and teamwork among employees

Encourage collaboration and celebrate team achievements

Wellness Initiatives

Implement wellness programs that promote physical and mental well-being

Create a supportive environment for maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Values Alignment

Establish and communicate organizational values that align with the principles of respect, fairness, and support

Ensure that these values are consistently upheld at all levels of the organization.

Feedback and Improvement

Provide constructive feedback for continuous improvement

Create an environment where feedback is seen as a tool for growth rather than criticism

While the term “unconditional love” may not be commonly used in a professional setting, the principles of creating a positive and supportive workplace align with the idea of fostering strong, healthy relationships between colleagues. By incorporating these principles, organizations can contribute to a more positive and fulfilling work experience for their employees.

Adulting encompasses various aspects of life, such as financial independence, self-sufficiency, decision-making, and taking care of one’s own well-being. Adulting often involves activities like paying bills, managing finances, maintaining a home, cooking meals, holding a job, and making important life choices.

Adulting is often used humorously or ironically to highlight the challenges and, at times, the overwhelming nature of transitioning from adolescence or young adulthood into full-fledged adulthood. It acknowledges that becoming an adult can be a complex and sometimes daunting journey that requires learning and adapting to new responsibilities and expectations.

Adulting captures the idea of taking on the roles and responsibilities of an adult and learning how to navigate the complexities of life independently. Adulting is a term that has gained popularity in recent years, especially in discussions about the challenges faced by young adults as they transition into adulthood.

Christine runs a blog called Department of Adulting. I catch up with her and talk about her blog, and how she makes a difference in the lives of other people.

Christine a pleasure to interview you. You are the first on Four Columns with a Ph.D. Tell me something about you.

Thank you so much for taking the time to interview me! As you mentioned, I have my Ph.D. in Sociology. I pursued Sociology because I’ve always been driven to try to make the world a better place. Sociology is all about understanding how the society we live in shapes our lives, opportunities, and interactions. So, I’ve spent my education and career trying to write, teach, and do research on topics that will help improve people’s lives and access to opportunities. I’ve done research on everything from gun violence’s impact on mental health to the ways that moving across the country can impact our economic well-being.

Aside from that, I grew up in Seattle and still live there with my partner. When I’m not writing and researching, I’m running, rock climbing, hiking, and walking everywhere. I hate driving and love being active so being an avid walker is a win-win for me.

What is your blog adulting all about? Why should we read it?

As I mentioned above, I’m really passionate about doing work that will improve people’s lives and opportunities. One thing I’ve noticed from the students I’ve taught and my own experience is that we don’t get a lot of formal education in many of the areas that have a foundational impact on our lives. For example, very few people are taught how to invest, develop a budget, and ask for a promotion. Similarly, we’re not really taught how to develop a fitness plan and manage our mental health and self-esteem.

My blog, Department of Adulting, is all about teaching those lessons that we wished we had learned in school in a fun, accessible, and fact-driven way. I believe that Department of Adulting offers readers lots of fun, practical advice that can improve their lives. No matter your interests, there’s probably a post that can help you out, whether it’s how to boost fertility in your 30s and 40s to how to house hack.

Walk me through how I can get my 10-year-old involved in personal finance, and budgeting and to become wise in that area with their money.

Great question! One of my favorite ways to do this is with an allowance. Some parents decide to give their children an allowance for chores or finishing homework and some don’t. However, the key is to provide children with a regular allowance instead of purchasing them whatever they want when you’re at the store. Having children purchase what they want from their allowance helps teach them the value of money and how to save for things they really want. Many kids experience buyer’s regret in the early days of having an allowance. But it’s better to experience that with $20 when you’re 10 years old than $200 or more when you’re an adult.

Aside from that, I love giving kids the opportunity to help plan trips and family outings. Give kids a budget and tell them to plan food and activities for an afternoon or a day. It’s a fun way of teaching kids how to manage money and understand the cost of activities. You might also involve kids in money discussions about the household budget.

Why is it important to have a household budget?

A household budget is a great tool for making sure you’re spending money on things that are meaningful to you and that you’re on track for your savings goals. A lot of people think about a budget as being restrictive. I actually think it’s the opposite if we do it right. Many of us spend tons of money on things that don’t matter that much to us. It might be a streaming service we never watch or clothes we didn’t need. When we create a budget, it gives us a chance to identify the expenses that don’t really matter to us and cut those so that we have more money for the things that are important.

And one of those things is our savings goals. Many of us have things we are saving for (or dreaming of!) By creating a budget, we can make sure we are putting money towards our dreams so that we can eventually make them a reality.

Help me understand a holistic approach to health, where we eat well, sleep well, exercise well, and focus on self-care and mental health.

In Western society, we tend to think about health in a very limited way. We mainly understand it in terms of physical health, and we mainly understand physical health in terms of what we can see, like body shape. This means we can look at a very skinny person and think that they are the epitome of health, when really they may be underweight, sleep poorly, or be under a lot of stress. All of these things are very harmful to health. This also means that we put a lot of pressure on ourselves and others to look a certain way, even if that comes at the expense of our mental and physical health.

To be healthy we do need to have a nutritious diet and move our bodies regularly. However, we also need to support our mental health, have strong social relationships, get enough sleep, and engage in activities that make us feel full and alive. Optimal health will look different for each of us because we’ll each have different needs in these areas.

Social media makes us feel inadequate and gives us JOMO. Talk to me about the negative impact of social media and how to deal with JOMO.

There has been a lot of research in recent years showing that more time on social media is associated with worse mental health and self-esteem. Social media is filled with filtered and photoshopped images, not to mention images that were one of dozens or more pictures taken to find the perfect one. Social media also largely shows the highlights of people’s lives. By constantly seeing pictures of perfect-looking people having perfect-looking moments, we can feel like we don’t measure up. On top of that, social media gives us the illusion that we’re socializing, when we’re really not having healthy social interactions with people.

Consequently, it’s important to put limits on the time we spend on social media and the kinds of accounts we follow. It also means that we need to prioritize spending time in real life with friends and family. The joy of missing out (JOMO) has become really popular in recent years. But the long-term effects of missing out are, in fact, worse mental health because real-life socialization is key for our well-being.

You talk about loneliness, which I believe is endemic. Help my readers how to deal with it, how to make friends, and how to get involved in the community.

When we’re busy and stressed out, it makes sense that people would want to just spend time vegging at home. But the reality is that socializing, especially with close friends or family, is one of the best things we can do for our stress levels. Research shows time and again that those with close friendships live longer, happier lives. And, again, spending time on social media is no replacement for socializing. If you don’t have any close friends or you’re looking to make new ones, I recommend thinking about how you can capitalize on your interests. If you love animals, try volunteering at an animal shelter. If you love running, find a local running group. MeetUp is a great resource for finding local interest groups. Since you know you’ll have something in common with the people you meet, it makes for an easy icebreaker.

What do women deserve?

Society expects a lot of women. I think many women have a desire to be perfect—the perfect friend, employee, mother, daughter, etc. However, everyone deserves to make mistakes and not have those mistakes lead to an identity crisis. We can be great employees and sometimes screw up a deadline or be amazing moms that sometimes lose patience with our kids. Perfect means there’s only room for black and white. Either we achieved perfection or we didn’t. The reality is we can never achieve perfection and women deserve to let that ideal go.

Women also deserve to take up space and not diminish themselves. This means owning their personality and intelligence as well as advocating for what they want and need. Taking up space can mean asking for that promotion and raise, as well as standing confidently by the counter at Starbucks not constantly worrying if you’re in someone’s way. The latter is something I definitely need to work on.

I liked your post on boundaries. What is it and how can it make us better people?

We can set boundaries in both our professional and personal lives. With technology, we can now work at any time of the day or night if we choose to. However, is that really how we want to spend all our time? It’s important to put limits on the time we work or spend time on activities or people who drain our energy (looking at your social media!) And if you’re in a position of power, it’s important to model these kinds of boundaries for your employees as well. Having boundaries is kind of like having a budget. We have limited time just like we have limited money. Setting boundaries helps us determine what activities are not important to us and what we need to limit so that we have time for the things that really matter. Plus, having boundaries helps us achieve the kind of holistic health we discussed earlier. Boundaries give us more time and energy for exercise, cooking food, and socializing with loved ones by limiting our draining activities.

Why is reading so important to us?

I believe that reading is one of the best ways of developing compassion for others and ourselves. The reality is that many of us live and interact with people who are similar to us in many ways. If you grew up in a middle-class family in the United States, for example, you’ll generally have little understanding of what it’s like for a woman who immigrated with her family from Syria to Europe. However, reading gives us the chance to put ourselves in the shoes of people we would probably never meet. These people can be real or fictional, but putting yourself in the mind of someone else helps give you an appreciation for both the diversity of humanity and the things that unite us.

I also love non-fiction books because they are such a great way of building curiosity and expanding your mind. For example, I love reading books about wildlife. It’s such a fun area to get curious about even though my career has nothing to do with animals.

Talk to me about the city you live in the food scene and why we should visit it.

I have lived in Seattle all my life and would never consider moving. It’s one of the most beautiful areas in the world. Seattle is surrounded by mountains, water, and trees. It’s a world-class place to visit if you love any kind of outdoor adventure. Plus, we’ve had so many people move here from other states and countries that there is a wide variety of cuisines. For example, we have a thriving Asian district in Seattle. So, if you love Japanese, Korean, Indian, and Vietnamese food, to name a few, we have so many great options. We also have incredible seafood all year round. And if you have any dietary restrictions, most restaurants will offer a lot of support and catering to support your needs. I have Celiac disease so I’m very appreciative that restaurants are often so supportive.

I want to know about a challenging situation in your life, how you dealt with it, and how you came across as victorious on the other side.

Five years ago, I became really sick with an undiagnosed illness that gave me a high fever, and swollen throat, and made me cough constantly. I saw many doctors and specialists and no one could figure out what I had. There was one point when I was in the hospital, fever spiking, getting a spinal tap to test whether I had leukemia or meningitis. Luckily the tests came back negative. However, I remember thinking at that moment that there was no way I was going to die from that illness. And that once I was out of the hospital I was going to do all the things I’d been too scared to do, like learn how to rock climb.

I finally got a diagnosis three months later and had a minor surgery to resolve the issue. But I stayed true to that promise and learned to rock climb, started hiking on my own, traveled solo to Peru, and embraced my life and my health.
