I really wish that I could have a garden and the time to tend to it. Growing up my grandparents always had a garden in the back yard. Each year, we would get fresh cucumbers, okra, tomatoes, asparagus, squash, and black eyed peas from my great grandpas farm. I don’t even have flowers because of my back problems. Even though I love flowers, making a flower bed and the upkeep would be too much for me.

Gardening can be such a great pastime and can have a positive impact with regards to mental and physical health too. I think we could all benefit greatly from a home with a garden. I'm glad that this is something you choose to do yourself. In time and with experience yo can learn all sorts of things with regards to taking care of grass and which plants are best for your soil type, light exposure etc. I'm glad that your mother in law grows veg as that can be so much tastier than shop bought.

I always appreciate gardens, but I am awful at growing things. I have killed more plants than I care to recall. My Mom is wonderful in the garden though, so I admire her plants.

Your journey from a 'city boy' to learning from your lawn's struggles is such a great story. The lesson about needing a 'solid base' of topsoil, and how that translates to building our lives on character and discipline, really hit home. It's encouraging to see how patience and hard work paid off for your garden.
And thank you for the heartfelt comments on my blog.

My favorite lesson here is "what you don't see matters" and that is something I've learned the hard way lately. I had never considered gardening as a way to learn life lessons, but I love it! Reading these was a fantastic reminder for me, as I go through a rough time in my life. I appreciate that!

I’m not much of a gardener but I learned a lot from this post. For example, as humans it’s true that we have different strengths and weaknesses but that is what makes us unique and adaptable. Good post!
