These attractions draw visitors across the region to marvel at their scenic landscapes, delve into their rich history, and appreciate the engineering marvels of a bygone era.

DeCew Falls, St. Catharines, Ontario: A Natural and Historical Gem

Nestled in the scenic landscape of St. Catharines, Ontario, DeCew Falls is a captivating destination that seamlessly blends natural beauty, historical significance, and recreational opportunities. Comprising two waterfalls—the Upper and Lower DeCew Falls—this site is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and a testament to the area’s rich cultural heritage.

Natural Beauty

The Upper DeCew Falls, a stunning 22-meter plunge waterfall, is the more prominent of the two. Surrounded by lush greenery, it offers visitors a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of urban life. The Lower DeCew Falls, though smaller, is equally charming, with its cascade-style flow over rugged rock formations. Both falls are located along Twelve Mile Creek, a waterway to the region’s picturesque landscape.

The falls are part of the Bruce Trail, Canada’s oldest and longest marked hiking trail. This trail meanders through the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, offering hikers breathtaking views of the falls and the surrounding forest. The area is enchanting during autumn when the foliage bursts into vibrant red, orange, and gold hues.

Historical Significance

DeCew Falls is not just a natural wonder, but also steeped in history. The site is named after John DeCew, a United Empire Loyalist who established a mill in the area in the early 19th century. His stone house, built in 1808, still stands nearby and serves as a reminder of the area’s early settlement.

The falls are also closely associated with the remarkable story of Laura Secord, a Canadian heroine of the War of 1812. According to historical accounts, Secord passed through this area on her perilous 32-kilometer journey to warn British forces of an impending American attack. Her bravery is commemorated at several sites in St. Catharines, making DeCew Falls a point of interest for history buffs.

Recreational Opportunities

For adventure seekers, DeCew Falls provides an ideal backdrop for hiking, photography, and nature exploration. The trails vary in difficulty, making the area accessible to both casual walkers and experienced hikers. However, visitors should exercise caution, as the paths can be steep and slippery, particularly near the falls.

The Morningstar Mill, located adjacent to the Upper DeCew Falls, adds another layer of interest. This well-preserved 19th-century gristmill is still operational and offers guided tours, giving visitors a glimpse into the region’s industrial past. The mill’s picturesque setting makes it a favorite spot for photographers and history enthusiasts.

Preservation and Accessibility

Efforts have been made to preserve DeCew Falls’ natural and historical integrity. While the site is open to the public, visitors are encouraged to respect the environment by staying on designated trails and refraining from littering. The falls are easily accessible by car, with parking near the Morningstar Mill.

Morningstar Mill

Morningstar Mill, located in St. Catharines, Ontario, is a cherished historic site that showcases the region’s industrial heritage. Nestled on the scenic escarpment overlooking Decew Falls, this 19th-century water-powered gristmill offers visitors a glimpse into the past while serving as a reminder of the ingenuity and perseverance of early settlers in the area.

A Brief History

Established in 1872, Morningstar Mill was originally owned and operated by Wilson Morningstar, a local miller who became synonymous with its success. The mill’s strategic location near Decew Falls allowed it to harness the power of water to grind wheat into flour, an essential commodity for the growing community. Over time, the mill grew into a vital hub for the local economy, supporting farmers and contributing to the area’s development.

Recognizing its historical significance, the site was preserved and eventually restored. Today, it stands as a testament to St. Catharines’ rich industrial past and the resilience of its pioneers.

What Makes Morningstar Mill Unique

One of the key attractions of Morningstar Mill is its working machinery, much of which dates back to the 19th century. Unlike many other historical sites, Morningstar Mill is fully operational, providing visitors with live demonstrations of water-powered milling. The sound of rushing water and the rhythmic hum of the millstones evoke an authentic sense of life in the late 1800s.

The mill is also home to an impressive collection of antique tools and artifacts illuminating traditional milling practices. Volunteers, dressed in period clothing, offer educational tours and share fascinating stories about the mill’s history and the Morningstar family’s role in shaping the community.

Natural Beauty and Recreational Opportunities

The health benefits of traveling and being outdoors are immense. The essential benefits of traveling are to improve your overall well-being. The American Journal of Epidemiology reported that women have a lower risk of heart attack if they traveled at least twice a year. When you head off to a new area, it invigorates your mind and body and makes you more productive. Traveling helps you meet new people, makes you grateful, and appreciate different cultures, reduces stress, makes you self-reflective, boosts your confidence, and makes you more creative.

Jessi Bang is obsessed with traveling and the outdoors. We talk about life, her love for the outdoors, nature, and her humanitarian work.

Jessie, please tell me something important about you?

I’m overly obsessed with nature and the outdoors. I believe that being outside is the key to staying sane in this crazy world.

What is the rambling raccoon all about? How did you come up with the name? Who is your audience and why should we read it?

The name, “The Rambling Raccoon” sort of just happened. A strange fact about me: I love love love raccoons! I know, my Utah is showing. They are so adorable and handsy! I also do a ton of rambling on my blog. It’s my place to not only share my adventures but also escape my own reality sometimes! My audience is a mixture of outdoor enthusiasts, travelers, and people who resonate with my lifestyle posts. There really is something for everyone! Thousands and thousands of people visit Utah every year, especially Zion National Park, and I want people to know that there are so many amazing hiking opportunities off the beaten path! In the same area! My goal is to encourage everyone to get outside as much as possible, to see what this beautiful world has to offer us.

What is different and unique about your blog?

My blog is a mixture of awesome hikes to experience in and around Southern Utah, amazing travel experiences around the globe, and raw lifestyle posts that say life exactly how it is. I haven’t seen any blog out there that is hiking, travel, or lifestyle, so it’s definitely unique! It’s what my life is made up of, and what I enjoy the most.

I am a big believer in giving and supporting charities? Walk me through your own experiences?

I am on the board of a local nonprofit, “Global Education Philanthropists”. We fight human trafficking both domestically and globally through education. It has opened my eyes to the horror of human trafficking all over the world. We live in this fantasy world where these things only happen in a faraway place. I’m here to tell you that it exists right in your backyard. We also do amazing and life-changing humanitarian trips. These trips give us the opportunity to visit villages all over the world and provide humanitarian aid.

Life is challenging…how do you deal with it? Do you pray, read, meditate, take it one day at a time or just relax?

Sometimes I just have a meltdown and enjoy a good cry. Other times I just curl in the fetal position and watch Netflix. HA! But in all honesty, being outside is my therapy. And fun fact, it’s free.

Do you find writing cathartic and do you blog full time?

Both, really! Last year I was part of a business that ultimately failed. It gave me the opportunity to finally start my blog, which I had wanted to do for years. So I took a chance and did my blog full-time while living off my savings until I had to get a job. Crazy, right? Maybe. I have no regrets. I’m currently doing my blog, running a lot of the operational and trip side of the nonprofit, and working as an independent contractor for a website development company.

To find balance in 2022 is tough. How do you balance, faith, food, finance, and family?

I think making time for the things that are important to you is key. Being active both outdoors and at the gym is a very important part of how I stay balanced both mentally and physically. Maintaining a strong relationship with God and my family is equally as important. Make time for things that matter, and learn to sometimes just let the rest go.
