Port Dover is a picturesque town in Norfolk County, Ontario, Canada. It is situated on the northern shore of Lake Erie and is known for its scenic waterfront, beaches, and vibrant community.

Here are my favorite things to do in Port Dover.

Visit the Beach

Enjoy the sandy shores of Port Dover Beach on Lake Erie. It’s a great place to relax, swim, or take a stroll along the waterfront.

Lighthouse

The heartbeat of Port Dover is undeniably its iconic pier and lighthouse. Jutting out into Lake Erie, the pier offers breathtaking water views and serves as a gathering place for locals and visitors alike. On any given day, one can witness the rhythmic ebb and flow of the lake, accompanied by the laughter of children, the chatter of fishermen, and the occasional cry of seagulls overhead. Standing proudly at the end of the pier, the lighthouse serves as both a functional beacon for mariners and a symbol of Port Dover’s maritime identity.

Dining

Given its proximity to Lake Erie, Port Dover often features fresh seafood on its menus. Many restaurants in the area take advantage of locally sourced ingredients to offer a diverse and delicious culinary experience. Whether you’re in the mood for casual dining, pub fare, or fine dining, Port Dover typically has something to suit various tastes. The atmosphere in Port Dover can be relaxed and welcoming, reflecting the town’s small-town charm.

My first pick is the Arbor. The restaurant has been feeding customers since 1919 and is famous for foot-long hot dogs, fresh-cut fries, Golden Glow, and ice cream.

If you like ribs, briskets, chicken wings and amazing BBQ sandwiches then Fat Back BBQ is for you.

If you want to sit down and enjoy the view of the lake then I recommend Callahan’s Beach House or 211 Main.

Downtown Shopping

The town’s main thoroughfare, Main Street, is a charming stretch lined with local shops, restaurants, and boutiques. From quaint cafes serving freshly brewed coffee to artisanal boutiques offering unique handmade goods, Main Street reflects the entrepreneurial spirit of the town’s residents. Visitors can stroll along the sidewalks, exploring the diverse array of offerings and immersing themselves in the warm and inviting atmosphere that defines Port Dover.

Lighthouse Festival Theatre

The Lighthouse Theatre is a 200-seat theatre that focuses on musicals and comedies in the summer.

Lighthouse Festival was established in 1980 when Sara Staysa rallied the community to repair the Port Dover old Town Hall roof so that the auditorium could once again be a theatre. Staysa was the Artistic Director of Carpet Bag Theatre Company out of Brantford and was looking for a building to operate out of. To avoid confusion with the original Carpet Bag Theatre Company, the new company in Port Dover was named Lighthouse Festival Theatre. The theatre has continued to operate working through renovations to the historical building and financial challenges, always with community support, now staging a very popular summer season of comedies, musicals, and stories for the soul, the one-act festival from January to March annually, community and young actors’ productions, as well as numerous guest events that keep the theatre busy all year round.

Port Dover is renowned for its vibrant and close-knit community. Residents take pride in their town, evident in the numerous community events and festivals that dot the annual calendar. The most famous among these is the Friday the 13th motorcycle rally, a tradition that began in 1981 and has since grown into a massive gathering of motorcycle enthusiasts from far and wide.

For those seeking natural beauty, Port Dover does not disappoint. The surrounding landscapes, characterized by rolling hills and fertile farmland, provide a picturesque backdrop to the town. The nearby Backus Woods, a Carolinian forest and nature reserve, offers hiking trails and a chance to connect with the region’s diverse flora and fauna. How to Spend an Exciting Day in Cambridge Ontario

Cambridge, Ontario offers various activities, theatre, musicals, and attractions to explore.

Cambridge, Ontario is a vibrant and picturesque city located in the heart of southwestern Ontario, Canada.

One of the defining features of Cambridge, Ontario is its rich history. The city was formed in 1973 through the amalgamation of three smaller communities: Galt, Preston, and Hespeler. Each of these former towns has its distinct character and contributes to the diverse tapestry of the city.

Here’s a suggested itinerary to make the most of your day in Cambridge

Morning

Start your day in the historic area known as Galt.

Galt, the oldest of the three towns, boasts stunning Victorian-era architecture. Its downtown core is home to beautifully preserved limestone buildings that house a variety of unique shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions.

Visit the Cambridge Farmers’ Market. Located in the historic downtown area, the market offers a wide range of fresh produce, baked goods, local crafts, and more. Enjoy a delicious breakfast or pick up some snacks for later.

Walk to the Cambridge City Hall, a striking neoclassical building, that stands proudly in Galt’s core and serves as a symbol of the city’s heritage.

Take a stroll along the Grand River and explore the charming streets lined with Victorian architecture.

Head to The Galtway, downtown Cambridge’s newest destination for experiencing art and community connectivity.

Lunch

For lunch, you have several options. You could try one of the local eateries in downtown Galt, such as one of the cozy cafes or pubs. Another option is to enjoy a picnic at Riverside Park, where you can relax by the river and enjoy the scenic surroundings.

After lunch, take a leisurely stroll to Preston, located along the banks of the Grand River, which offers a more industrial and residential atmosphere. It is known for its strong manufacturing presence, with several industrial parks and businesses contributing to the local economy. The riverfront area is a popular spot for recreational activities, including fishing, boating, and hiking.

Afternoon

Hespeler, situated in the western part of Cambridge, is known for its strong Scottish heritage. The town features charming stone buildings, quaint shops, and a beautiful downtown area. Hespeler’s Mill Pond is a picturesque spot where residents and visitors can enjoy scenic walks and picnics.

Alternatively, you can visit the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory. Explore the lush tropical gardens and encounter various species of butterflies and exotic birds in a vibrant and interactive environment.

Evening

In addition to its historical significance, Cambridge also offers a thriving arts and culture scene. The spectacular Hamilton Family Theatre Cambridge is situated in a historic downtown setting along the Grand River. This stunning state-of-the-art performing arts facility, designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects, offers world-class acoustics and excellent sightlines that provide unparalleled intimacy between the audience and the stage. The Theatre hosts various theatre and musical performances throughout the year. The 500-seat theatre facility is conveniently positioned near great shopping, exquisite dining, beautiful architecture, luxurious accommodations,s and a wide range of fascinating attractions.

We saw Beautiful: The Carole King Musical there. The interior is beautiful.

Dinner

You can choose to have dinner in the historic downtown area which is lined with restaurants or The Foundry. We decided to have tacos at the Mule.

A dynamic restaurant with a lively atmosphere. I order a Coke and Debbie has the Ginger Snap.

I am hungry and order a Pork Belly Bahn Mi, Fried Chicken, Sweet Pot Halloumi, OG Fish Taco, Brussels Sprouts, Cease & Desist Taco, The Cauliflower, Achiote Roast Chicken, and Habanero Brisket. The Tacos were delicious and outstanding.

In summary, Cambridge, Ontario is a city that beautifully blends its rich history with modern amenities and a strong sense of community. Elora Mill Hotel & Spa – Extraordinary

Elora Mill Hotel & Spa is a unique haven snuggled in ‘Ontario’s most beautiful village’. This sui-generis retreat offers visitors fabulous accommodation with 24-carat amenities.

I am entering the parking lot of the Elora Mill Hotel & Spa, and there is lots of parking. It is Saturday, there is a wedding going on and I am amazed.

The property is beautiful and top-notch.

We get to the restaurant and are escorted to a table overlooking the Elora Gorge. The restaurant is settled on the massive Elora Gorge surrounded by a ravishing, scenic, birds-eye view of the Grand River flowing through the bottom of the Gorge, 1 mile long, and limestone cliffs reaching 72 feet high. I am here to satiate in a gourmand experience that is anything but ordinary.

David is our attentive server and he is top-notch. He greets us and also offers us sparkling or mineral water. David knows the menu inside out.

I inquire about drinks and wine and he recommends Tobias the bartender/sommelier.

The table is clean and neatly laid out. The chairs are immaculate with no bread crumbs.

Debbie orders the Frog Splash and I go with the Ali Rosso.

I lavish the bread with the butter infused with honey and the right amount of Maldon salt and a sip of Rosso and I am ready.

I told David I am going to eat whatever he recommends. David recommends the rib eye medium rare. Debbie loves steak. I see the look in her eyes and she wants steak.

The steak comes with salad, vegetables, and potatoes.

The salad is green beans with red and white strawberries sprinkled with vinaigrette. At first, I thought the green beans were cooked or blanched. I have never seen a combo like this and it is outstanding.

For the vegetables, Debbie and I have an argument. I tell her the squash is outstanding. She tells me it is carrots. I am like no way. David informs me they are Thumbelina carrots. The gourmet mini carrot is drizzled with hazelnut sauce. Bellissimo.

Potatoes are grated and then deep fried and presented in Jenga style.

There is a reason why I am mentioning the steak the last.

I have eaten steak in Vegas, Dorchester, George V, Dubai, Montreal, and all the steak houses on Bay Street with peppercorn sauce, mustard cream, garlic mushroom, chimichurri, and Bearnaise, Cafe de Paris, and Salsa.

Elora Mill Hotel & Spa serves the steak with demiglace and capers. Capers?? Mon Dieu. Capers are salty and go with smoked salmon, anchovies, pasta, eggplant, and citrus. I have my doubts if this is the right combo with the steak.

The steak is the best I have ever eaten. It melts in your mouth. It is smoky and yet has all the grill flavors. I was a little hesitant to add the sauce. An old dog like me can be taught to be open to new taste buds. I tell Debbie next time we are grilling steak, I am serving it with capers.

The meal was flawless.

David brings the dessert menu and the ginger ice cream hits my eye. Debbie and I agree we have to try the dessert. Tobias recommends the Gran Marnier for her and the 16 yr Lagavulin for me as a digestif.

The pistachio cake with ginger ice cream is a perfect pairing made in heaven. I am washing it down with the Lagavulin and the beautiful view. It does not get any better than this.

David brings some macaroons for Debbie’s birthday.

At Elora Mill Hotel & Spa, customer service is a top priority and you can feel, sense, and see it in the care for the property, food served, cleanliness, and interactions with staff.

I have a nice chat with Michael Anderson the seasoned restaurant director. Most of the food is grown in-house at their own farms. The rest is sourced locally and they have a farm-to-table and everything made from scratch mentality.

This is the best dining experience I have experienced in Canada.

I strongly recommend that you make the drive to the Elora Mill Hotel & Spa and experience this unique dining experience. Make sure you read my tips on how to enjoy it.

Sandbanks Winery

Sandbanks Winery is located on the picturesque shores of Lake Ontario along the Loyalist Parkway in Prince Edward Country.

PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY

Prince Edward County (PEC) is located 220 km east of Toronto. It is just south of Belleville. The ground is atypical with many valleys and the foundation is limestone. The cracked limestone base and the stony soils allow bilge in the spring, take in all the water which allows the vines to go deep in the Indian summer, and yields a flavor that is potent, rich, full-bodied, and robust. The breeze from Lake Ontario gives maximum benefit to the vineyards of PEC.

As you exit the 401 and go south towards PEC, it is an amazing escape from the boring monotony of the 401. You are transformed into the countryside lined with unique vineyards in a succulent canvas of agrarian serenity.

Sandbanks Winery

Sandbanks Winery is stationed along the pictorial and scenic shores of Lake Ontario in the core of PEC. Catharine Langlois established the winery in 2001 and planted Marenchal Foch, Geisenheim, Vidal, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, and Baco Noir. Catharine’s vision for Sandbanks Winery ‘was to produce quality, award-winning wines at an approachable price, that pair, perfectly with delicious food, that is meant to be shared in harmony with family, friends, and that celebrate life.’

Sandbanks Winery is the ideal place to spend a summer day tasting wine in the tasting room, shopping in the boutique, and enjoying the large picnic area.

Sandbanks Winery was established by Catherine Langlois in 2001 who planted seven acres of vines. PEC became VQA designated area in 2007 and Sandbanks got its listing at the LCBO and has taken off since then. Arterra Wines purchased it in 2020.

Wine Tasting

There is a selection of wines to choose from White, Rose, Red, and Sweet. My favorites are the Sauvignon Blanc and Late Harvest (Vidal).

Sandbanks Winery is located at 17598 Loyalist Parkway in Wellington Ontario. It is open seven days a week from 11 am to 6 pm. Please make a reservation for wine tasting and always ask about the wine tour.

Waupoos Estates Winery

Waupoos Estates Winery occupies a dazzling and beautiful 100-acre waterfront property and was the first winery in PEC. Waupoos grows 18 different varieties on 20 acres of vineyards.

The Farm House

The Farm House is the showcase of restored century home snuggled on the Waupoos Estates Winery’s pictorial terrace. The heart-stopping all-embracing glimpse of the Prince Edward Bay and the manicured vineyard is the piece de resistance of The Farm House. This jaw-dropping scenery is impeccable for your stay. The Farm House consists of four bedrooms on the upper level. The advantage of renting a room is that it grants access to the front parlor room and the balcony overlooking the Bay. The entire house, upper floors, or individual bedrooms can be rented.

The Restaurant

The Restaurant at Waupoos Estates is towards the water’s edge. The restaurant is gazebo style fully enclosed and far-reaching views of Lake Ontario.

The spotlight is on Farm to Table. The estate raises game birds, poultry, rabbits, goat, lamb, pork, and cattle in a fully operational farm. Fresh vegetables and herbs come from the garden plots. You also have a choice of pickles and preserves to take home.

Executive Chef Scott McInerney is a foodie who was educated in France, Australia, and Canada in viticulture, culinary arts, and wine, brings his magic to the restaurant.

Head Winemaker: Amy Baldwin

Amy is an alumnus of Niagara College in the Winery and Viticulture program. She believes in finding the balance between nature and science. She believes in the creative possibilities of the wine and is excited to add her touch.

Estate Experience Tour

I highly recommend that you take this tour. It is a private tour of the estate and the philosophy of the property, winemaking, and what farm to table is all about. After the tour, you get a four-course meal that is amazing.

For the Family

The petting zoo is amazing as you can pet the baby sheep and goats and can feed them grain.

The chocolate and candy store is full of stuff sourced locally and also has gelato, novelty candy, gourmet popcorn, and fudge.

My Favorite Wine

The Maple Ice is an amazing dessert wine with the aroma of maple, peach, and apple hitting your palate. Try it with any dessert or blue cheese.

Location

Waupoos Estates Winery is located at 3016 Prince Edward County Rd 8, Picton, ON K0K 2T0. It is worth visiting as a family or for a romantic weekend or as a group of friends.
