I was raised in the Methodist church and they focus on each week of advent. They will light one candle each week and have a special sermon. Then the last candle is Christ candle. That candle is special and is light on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day whichever the church decides. We used to close out Christmas Eve service by singing Silent night. But the first candle to spread the flame was started from the Christ candle. It’s an amazing tradition.

I’ll be honest, I never actually knew that was what Advent meant and everything behind it. I just always assumed it was like the cute Advent calendars you can get with little surprises each day leading up to Christmas. Thanks for sharing this!

It is nice to give some thought to our holidays and their history, and the meanings behind them. I definitely learned a lot as I did not know much of this! I like thinking about these things and why we do particular activities for the holidays.

That was an interesting read and I learnt a fair amount. I had no idea that Advent had certain colours associated to it including purple and blue. I normally think of Christmas in general with greens, red and gold. I give lots of donations myself each Christmas to help others, it’s a nice tradition I’ve been doing for years now.

I know about Advent calendars, but was not aware of the different color themes attached to Advent itself. My daughter’s elementary school had put on a Christmas play and the nativity scene was part of the set. Thanks for sharing the true meaning of Christmas!

We aren’t religious, so we take all that out of Christmas. But we do advent calendars. Normally full of chocolates! It’s a fun way to count down until the big day.
