<p>From <a href="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/3-days-in-istanbul/">Istanbul</a>, with its remarkable meeting of East and West, to <a href="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/exploring-cappadocia/">Cappadocia </a>and its extraordinary landscapes and Christian heritage, to <a href="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/exploring-ephesus-ancient-wonders-and-sacred-sites/">Ephesus</a>, where we walked through one of the ancient world&#8217;s great cities, and <a href="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/pamukkale-and-hierapolis-travel-guide/">Hierapolis</a>, with its ancient thermal waters, each destination has added another piece to our understanding of this remarkable country.</p>
<p>Our journey through Türkiye continued to another place where history, faith and the human search for healing come together: the Asclepieion of Pergamon.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The Asclepieion was one of the most famous healing sanctuaries of the ancient world. Dedicated to Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine, it was a place where people came seeking relief from illness through a combination of medical treatments, water, exercise, rest, spiritual practices, and faith.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">As we walked through the ruins, I couldn&#8217;t help but think about the connection between Pergamon and Hierapolis.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">At Hierapolis, the thermal waters were central to the healing experience. At the Asclepieion, water was again part of the story, but this time it was woven into a much broader approach that considered the body, <a href="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/yoga-meditation-and-mindfulness-benefits/">mind</a> and <a href="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/benefits-of-solitude-silence/">spirit</a>.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">And just as we had experienced in Cappadocia and Istanbul, the deeper we looked, the more layers of history we discovered.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: center;"><strong>Walking Into an Ancient Healing Sanctuary</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The Asclepieion lies near modern-day Bergama, in western Türkiye. Its history stretches back to the 4th century BCE, although the sanctuary developed considerably over the centuries and became particularly important during the Roman period.</p>
<p><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-30877" src="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/20260324_113903-1024x504.jpg" alt="" width="1024" height="504" srcset="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/20260324_113903-1024x504.jpg 1024w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/20260324_113903-300x148.jpg 300w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/20260324_113903-768x378.jpg 768w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/20260324_113903-1536x757.jpg 1536w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/20260324_113903-2048x1009.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Walking into the site today, it is easy to see the remains of temples, columns, pathways and treatment areas.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">But I found myself trying to look beyond the ruins.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Who were the people who came here?</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">What were they hoping for?</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Were they frightened? Exhausted? Desperate for an answer?</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">For them, this was not an archaeological site. It was a place of <a href="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/hope/">hope</a>.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">That thought stayed with me as we explored.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: center;"><strong>The Sacred Way</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">One of the most memorable features of the Asclepieion is the Sacred Way, the ancient road connecting Pergamon with the sanctuary.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-30882" src="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_074818415-1024x768.jpg" alt="" width="1024" height="768" srcset="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_074818415-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_074818415-300x225.jpg 300w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_074818415-768x576.jpg 768w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_074818415-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_074818415-2048x1536.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The approximately one-kilometer journey would have gradually taken patients away from the city and toward the quieter surroundings of the healing center.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">I liked the symbolism of that journey.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Even today, when we are dealing with stress or illness, sometimes we instinctively want to get away from the noise.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">We look for somewhere quieter.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">We walk.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">We sit beside water.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">We spend time in nature.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">We<a href="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/what-is-prayer/"> pray</a>.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">We rest.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The ancient visitors to the Asclepieion were doing some of these same things, although their understanding of medicine and faith was very different from ours.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">As I walked along the remains of the Sacred Way, I thought back to our journey through Türkiye.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Every place seemed to reveal another layer.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Istanbul had been about civilizations and empires.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Cappadocia had been about landscape, faith and resilience.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Hierapolis had brought us face-to-face with ancient healing through its thermal waters.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">And Pergamon seemed to bring all of those themes together.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: center;"><strong>Healing the Whole Person</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">What fascinated me most about the Asclepieion was the idea that healing was not limited to treating the body.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-30881" src="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_074503543.MP_-1024x768.jpg" alt="" width="1024" height="768" srcset="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_074503543.MP_-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_074503543.MP_-300x225.jpg 300w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_074503543.MP_-768x576.jpg 768w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_074503543.MP_-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_074503543.MP_-2048x1536.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Patients could receive herbal remedies, ointments, massages and physical treatments. Water was incorporated into the experience, and exercise was encouraged.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">But there was also a strong spiritual and psychological component.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Patients participated in rituals and could sleep within the sanctuary in the hope of receiving a message from Asclepius through a dream.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">This practice, known as incubation, is one of the most fascinating aspects of ancient healing.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Whether we interpret it through the lens of religion, psychology or ancient medical practice, it reveals something very human.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">People wanted to understand their illness.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">They wanted reassurance.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">And they wanted to believe that recovery was possible.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: center;"><strong>From Hierapolis to Pergamon</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Visiting Pergamon after Hierapolis made the contrast particularly interesting.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">At Hierapolis, the thermal springs remain one of the defining features of the landscape. The warm mineral-rich waters helped make the city a destination for people seeking health and relaxation.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">At Pergamon, the healing experience was broader.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Water was important, but so were movement, rest, dreams, music, theatre and spiritual belief.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The two sites made me wonder whether the ancient world understood something we sometimes forget.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-30880" src="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_081745992-1024x768.jpg" alt="" width="1024" height="768" srcset="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_081745992-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_081745992-300x225.jpg 300w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_081745992-768x576.jpg 768w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_081745992-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_081745992-2048x1536.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Healing is rarely just one thing.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Modern medicine has given us extraordinary tools, but recovering from illness can still involve much more than medicine alone.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">We need rest.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">We need encouragement.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">We need people around us.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">We need hope.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">And sometimes we simply need a quiet place to breathe.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: center;"><strong>The Sound of Water Underground</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The cryptoporticus, an underground vaulted passage, was another fascinating part of our visit.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Patients could walk through this cooler, darker space while the sound of flowing water created a peaceful atmosphere.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">After spending time in the Turkish sun, I could immediately appreciate how different the environment would have felt.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">There was something almost meditative about imagining people walking through the passage thousands of years ago.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The sound of water.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-30824" src="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_080506141.MP_-768x1024.jpg" alt="" width="768" height="1024" srcset="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_080506141.MP_-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_080506141.MP_-225x300.jpg 225w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_080506141.MP_-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_080506141.MP_-1536x2048.jpg 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The coolness of the stone.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The quiet.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">It reminded me again of Hierapolis, where water was so central to the experience of the ancient city.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Different place.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Different form of healing.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">But the same human attraction to water as a source of comfort and renewal.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: center;"><strong>A Theatre in a Place of Healing</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The Asclepieion also had a Roman theatre capable of holding thousands of people.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-30823" src="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_081044885.MP_-1024x768.jpg" alt="" width="1024" height="768" srcset="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_081044885.MP_-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_081044885.MP_-300x225.jpg 300w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_081044885.MP_-768x576.jpg 768w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_081044885.MP_-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_081044885.MP_-2048x1536.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">At first, that seemed like an unusual feature for a healing center.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">But the more I thought about it, the more it made sense.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Healing isn&#8217;t always about medicine.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Sometimes you need music.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Sometimes you need laughter.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Sometimes you need a story that takes your mind somewhere else.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The ancient world understood that patients were people, not simply illnesses.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The theatre gave them an opportunity to experience something beyond their condition.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Standing there, I couldn&#8217;t help but think about how modern healthcare increasingly recognizes the importance of mental and emotional wellbeing too.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: center;"><strong>Galen and the Medical Legacy of Pergamon</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The Asclepieion was also connected to Galen of Pergamon, one of antiquity&#8217;s most influential physicians.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Born in Pergamon, Galen studied medicine and eventually travelled to Rome, where he became physician to members of the imperial court.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">His writings influenced medical thought for centuries.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Knowing that as we walked around the site made the Asclepieion feel more significant.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">We weren&#8217;t simply standing among ancient ruins.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">We were walking through a place connected to the development of medical knowledge itself.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-30878" src="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_081803580.MP_-1024x768.jpg" alt="" width="1024" height="768" srcset="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_081803580.MP_-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_081803580.MP_-300x225.jpg 300w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_081803580.MP_-768x576.jpg 768w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_081803580.MP_-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/PXL_20260324_081803580.MP_-2048x1536.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<h4 style="text-align: center;"><strong>The Stories of the People Who Came Here</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">One person who helps us understand the Asclepieion from a patient&#8217;s perspective is Aelius Aristides, a prominent orator who spent considerable time at the sanctuary.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">He recorded his experiences, illnesses, dreams and treatments in his <em>Sacred Tales</em>.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">His writings allow us to glimpse the personal side of the sanctuary.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">And that is what I found most moving.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Archaeological sites can sometimes feel distant.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">We see broken columns and imagine ancient civilizations as something completely removed from our own lives.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">But Aristides reminds us that people were people.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">They worried about their health.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">They searched for answers.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">They prayed.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">They dreamed.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">They hoped.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">We do the same.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: center;"><strong>Leaving Pergamon</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">As we left the Asclepieion, I found myself thinking about that simple word: healing.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The ancient physicians did not have the medical knowledge we have today. Some of their treatments were based on beliefs that modern science would not support.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">But their patients came here with the same basic desire we have today.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">They wanted to get better.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">They wanted relief.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">They wanted someone to help them.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">And they wanted hope.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">That is what connected Pergamon to our earlier experiences in Türkiye for me.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Istanbul, Cappadocia, Hierapolis and Pergamon are very different places, but together they tell a much larger story about people, faith, culture and our constant search for something beyond ourselves.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Our journey through Türkiye wasn&#8217;t simply a trip through ancient history.</p>

Pamukkale and Hierapolis are firmly in the second category. Visiting this UNESCO World Heritage Site in southwestern <a href="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/3-days-in-istanbul/">Türkiye</a> was like stepping into a living history book where natural beauty and ancient civilization come together spectacularly.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Pamukkale, meaning &#8220;Cotton Castle&#8221; in Turkish, is famous for its brilliant white travertine terraces that cascade down the hillside. Created over thousands of years by mineral-rich thermal waters, the terraces resemble frozen waterfalls or snow-covered cliffs, even during the heat of summer.<img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-30739" src="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029681-1-1024x768.jpg" alt="Pamukkale and Hierapolis" width="1024" height="768" srcset="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029681-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029681-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029681-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029681-1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029681-1-2048x1536.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Above these stunning formations lies Hierapolis, an ancient Greco-Roman city that flourished because of these very same healing waters.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-30740" src="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029682-1-1024x768.jpg" alt="" width="1024" height="768" srcset="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029682-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029682-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029682-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029682-1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029682-1-2048x1536.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">My visit combined breathtaking scenery with an incredible journey through nearly 2,300 years of history.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: center;"><strong>The Natural Wonder of Pamukkale</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The brilliant white terraces are formed as warm, calcium-rich water flows down the mountainside. As the water cools, it deposits calcium carbonate, creating the dazzling travertine pools that have made Pamukkale famous throughout the world.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-30742" src="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029680-1-1024x768.jpg" alt="" width="1024" height="768" srcset="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029680-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029680-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029680-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029680-1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029680-1-2048x1536.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Walking barefoot across the terraces is required to protect this fragile natural wonder. The warm water gently flowing over the white formations creates an unforgettable experience.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-30755" src="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_155447-1024x485.jpg" alt="Travertine in Pamukkale" width="1024" height="485" srcset="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_155447-1024x485.jpg 1024w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_155447-300x142.jpg 300w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_155447-768x364.jpg 768w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_155447-1536x728.jpg 1536w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_155447-2048x971.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Every turn offers another picture-perfect view, and as the sunlight changes throughout the day, the terraces take on different shades of white, cream, and pale blue.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-30744" src="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_130100515.MP_-1024x768.jpg" alt="" width="1024" height="768" srcset="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_130100515.MP_-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_130100515.MP_-300x225.jpg 300w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_130100515.MP_-768x576.jpg 768w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_130100515.MP_-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_130100515.MP_-2048x1536.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">For centuries people have travelled here seeking the therapeutic benefits of these thermal springs. Even today many visitors come not only for the scenery but also to enjoy the naturally warm mineral waters.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-30745" src="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_130112265.MP_-1024x768.jpg" alt="Pamukkale and Hierapolis" width="1024" height="768" srcset="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_130112265.MP_-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_130112265.MP_-300x225.jpg 300w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_130112265.MP_-768x576.jpg 768w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_130112265.MP_-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_130112265.MP_-2048x1536.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<h4 style="text-align: center;"><strong>Hierapolis: The Ancient Spa City</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The healing waters led to the founding of Hierapolis around 190 BC by King Eumenes II of Pergamon. The city was named after Hiera, believed to have been the wife of Telephus, the legendary founder of Pergamon.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The thermal springs quickly transformed Hierapolis into one of the most important spa cities in the ancient Roman world. Wealthy Romans travelled long distances to soak in the mineral-rich waters, believing they could cure arthritis, skin ailments, digestive problems, and numerous other illnesses.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The city prospered under Roman rule and became an impressive center of medicine, religion, commerce, and culture. Today, visitors can still walk the same marble streets once used by emperors, merchants, physicians, and pilgrims.</p>
<p>We began our exploration of Hierapolis by entering through the North Byzantine Gate, one of the city&#8217;s principal entrances during the Byzantine period.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-30741" src="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029678-1-1024x768.jpg" alt="" width="1024" height="768" srcset="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029678-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029678-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029678-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029678-1-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/1000029678-1-2048x1536.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p>Passing through this impressive gateway felt like stepping back in time. Beyond the massive stone walls stretched the ancient city, with its broad streets, towering columns, temples, baths, and monuments waiting to be discovered. Walking through the gate gave me a sense of what pilgrims, traders, and visitors might have experienced centuries ago as they arrived at one of the Roman world&#8217;s most celebrated healing centers. It was the perfect introduction to a city whose remarkable history unfolds with every step.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: center;"><strong>The Magnificent Roman Theatre</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">One of the absolute highlights of Hierapolis is its magnificent Roman theatre.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-30751" src="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_132901557-1024x768.jpg" alt="" width="1024" height="768" srcset="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_132901557-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_132901557-300x225.jpg 300w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_132901557-768x576.jpg 768w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_132901557-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_132901557-2048x1536.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Built into the hillside during the reigns of Emperors Hadrian and Septimius Severus, the theatre is remarkably well preserved. It could accommodate approximately 12,000 spectators, making it one of the largest theatres in Asia Minor.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-30747" src="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_132957020.MP_-1024x768.jpg" alt="" width="1024" height="768" srcset="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_132957020.MP_-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_132957020.MP_-300x225.jpg 300w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_132957020.MP_-768x576.jpg 768w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_132957020.MP_-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_132957020.MP_-2048x1536.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Climbing to the upper rows rewards visitors with breathtaking panoramic views over Pamukkale&#8217;s white terraces and the surrounding valley.</p>

<p class="isSelectedEnd">The richly decorated stage building showcases exquisite carvings of mythological figures, gods, emperors, and elaborate architectural details. Standing in the center of the theatre, it is easy to imagine audiences gathering nearly two thousand years ago to watch dramas, musical performances, and public ceremonies.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The theatre is undoubtedly one of the finest surviving examples of Roman architecture in Türkiye.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: center;"><strong>Walking Among Ancient Columns</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Throughout Hierapolis, countless marble columns still stand as silent reminders of the city&#8217;s former grandeur.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">As I wandered through the ancient streets, it was fascinating to see colonnaded avenues that once lined busy marketplaces and civic buildings. Many of these columns have been carefully restored, while others lie exactly where earthquakes brought them down centuries ago.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">These impressive remains help visitors visualize the elegance of Roman urban planning. Every fallen column tells part of the story of a city repeatedly rebuilt after devastating earthquakes, particularly the major earthquake of AD 60, after which Emperor Nero helped restore the city.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: center;"><strong>The Temple of Apollo</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">One of the most important religious sites in Hierapolis is the Temple of Apollo.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-30756" src="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_154831-1024x485.jpg" alt="" width="1024" height="485" srcset="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_154831-1024x485.jpg 1024w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_154831-300x142.jpg 300w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_154831-768x364.jpg 768w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_154831-1536x728.jpg 1536w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_154831-2048x971.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Apollo was revered as the city&#8217;s principal deity, associated with healing, prophecy, and divine protection. It was only fitting that a city famous for its therapeutic waters would dedicate one of its most sacred places to the god of healing.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Although only parts of the temple survive today, archaeologists have uncovered impressive foundations and architectural remains that reveal its former importance.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Pilgrims once gathered here seeking guidance from priests who interpreted mysterious signs believed to come from the gods.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: center;"><strong>The Plutonium: The Ancient Gate to Hell</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Perhaps the most fascinating location in Hierapolis is the Plutonium, often called the Gate to Hell.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-30750" src="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_134326403.MP_-1024x768.jpg" alt="" width="1024" height="768" srcset="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_134326403.MP_-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_134326403.MP_-300x225.jpg 300w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_134326403.MP_-768x576.jpg 768w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_134326403.MP_-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/PXL_20260322_134326403.MP_-2048x1536.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Ancient people believed this cave was an entrance to the underworld ruled by Pluto, the Roman god of the dead. Thick clouds of invisible carbon dioxide gas naturally escaped from a deep fissure beneath the temple.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Animals brought near the entrance often died within minutes, reinforcing the belief that supernatural forces guarded the gateway to the underworld.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Priests who understood how the gases behaved carefully demonstrated their &#8220;miraculous&#8221; ability to survive near the entrance while animals perished, astonishing ancient visitors and strengthening the site&#8217;s religious significance.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Modern scientific research has confirmed that dangerous concentrations of naturally occurring carbon dioxide continue to emerge from the cave today, explaining the ancient legends without diminishing their mystery.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: center;"><strong>Early Christianity and Hierapolis</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Following the acceptance of Christianity by Emperor Constantine and his establishment of Constantinople as the &#8220;New Rome&#8221; in AD 330, Hierapolis entered an important new chapter in its history.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The city became an influential Christian center and was established as the seat of a bishop. Churches, chapels, and religious buildings gradually transformed the urban landscape.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Hierapolis is especially associated with St. Philip the Apostle, who is believed to have been martyred here during the first century. The impressive Martyrium of St. Philip became an important destination for Christian pilgrims from across the Byzantine Empire.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-30753" src="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_163800-1024x485.jpg" alt="" width="1024" height="485" srcset="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_163800-1024x485.jpg 1024w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_163800-300x142.jpg 300w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_163800-768x364.jpg 768w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_163800-1536x728.jpg 1536w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_163800-2048x971.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Today the ruins of churches and Christian monuments stand alongside Roman temples, beautifully illustrating the religious transformation that shaped the city over many centuries.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: center;"><strong>The Necropolis</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Stretching for more than two kilometers, the Necropolis of Hierapolis is among the largest ancient cemeteries in the Mediterranean.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-30752" src="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_164623-1024x485.jpg" alt="Pamukkale and Hierapolis" width="1024" height="485" srcset="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_164623-1024x485.jpg 1024w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_164623-300x142.jpg 300w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_164623-768x364.jpg 768w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_164623-1536x728.jpg 1536w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_164623-2048x971.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Thousands of tombs, sarcophagi, and family mausoleums line the ancient road leading into the city.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The sheer size of the necropolis reflects Hierapolis&#8217; reputation as a healing destination. Many people journeyed here hoping for cures, while others who passed away during treatment were buried nearby.</p>
<p><img decoding="async" class="alignnone size-large wp-image-30754" src="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_170437-1024x485.jpg" alt="Pamukkale and Hierapolis" width="1024" height="485" srcset="https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_170437-1024x485.jpg 1024w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_170437-300x142.jpg 300w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_170437-768x363.jpg 768w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_170437-1536x727.jpg 1536w, https://fourcolumnsofabalancedlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/20260322_170437-2048x969.jpg 2048w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Walking through this remarkable cemetery provides another powerful reminder of the city&#8217;s enduring importance throughout antiquity.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: center;"><strong>Why Pamukkale and Hierapolis Matter Today</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Pamukkale and Hierapolis offer an extraordinary combination of natural beauty, archaeology, history, religion, and geology that few destinations can match.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Where else can you walk across dazzling white thermal terraces, explore one of the finest Roman theatres in Asia Minor, stand before the Temple of Apollo, peer into the legendary Gate to Hell, swim among ancient Roman columns, and trace the beginnings of early Christianity, all in a single day?</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">The site is much more than a tourist attraction. It is a place where nature shaped civilization, where healing waters attracted emperors and ordinary people alike, and where ancient beliefs gradually gave way to Christianity, leaving behind layer upon layer of fascinating history.</p>
<h4 style="text-align: center;"><strong>Final Thoughts</strong></h4>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">Leaving Pamukkale and Hierapolis, I realized that the memories I would treasure most were not only the stunning white terraces but also the stories embedded in every stone. The theatre echoed with the voices of ancient audiences. The Temple of Apollo recalled centuries of worship and healing. The mysterious Gate to Hell reminded me how natural phenomena inspired powerful legends, while the churches of Hierapolis reflected the rise of Christianity in the Roman Empire.</p>
<p class="isSelectedEnd">For anyone planning a trip to Türkiye, Pamukkale and Hierapolis deserve a place at the very top of your itinerary. Whether you are captivated by history, archaeology, photography, geology, or simply the beauty of nature, this remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site delivers an unforgettable experience that spans more than two millennia.</p>
<p>It is a destination where the wonders of the natural world and the achievements of ancient civilization continue to inspire every visitor fortunate enough to walk its remarkable paths.</p>
