Vieux-Port Steakhouse

The Old Port (Vieux-Port) Steakhouse in Montreal is not only a classic restaurant but an institution.

The Vieux-Port Steakhouse has been on St. Paul Street for three decades, serving quality AAA-aged beef cooked faultlessly.

Inside the century-old edifice, you are taken in by the wood floors, old stone walls, cozy fireplaces, and an enrapt and observant staff.

You have a choice to eat on the street which is romantic, inside which is classy, or in the grandiose and splendid garden courtyard which will charm the socks out of you.

I choose the courtyard to enjoy the summer weather, gaze at the picturesque stone walls, get lost in the greenery, and enjoy a conversation with Debbie.

I am seated by a smiling host and the decor and the surroundings make me excited.

The busboy brings water, hot bread, and butter.

The waiter introduces himself and give us a menu.

The cocktail, wine, and food menu are extensive and impressive.

Debbie has a Sangria and I have a glass of red wine.

For the main course, I order the grilled lamb chops and Debbie order the 8oz filet mignon center-cut.

The lamb is cooked perfectly and goes well with the vegetables and potato puree. The steak goes well with the fries and vegetables.

The selection of desserts and dessert wines, cognacs, calvados, and aged tequila is impressive.

I order a Don Julio 1942 Anejo and a perfect drink after an amazing meal.

The restaurant is an icon in the restaurant landscape in Montreal with outstanding food, great service, a wide selection of wine, and a great atmosphere. One cannot ask for more.

  • Sounds like a great restaurant with amazing food and beautiful ambiance! I haven’t had a filet mignon in a while, and you have got me craving for one. We definitely need to change that and plan for a steakhouse in the future.

  • A nice steak with an amazing atmosphere, like that, sounds perfect to me. I’d love to do a date night there with my husband.

  • Am I drooling while reading this review and planning a visit to Vieux Port Steakhouse? Oh yes! Everything looks so tasty!!

  • Wow! I always wanted to visit this spot and taste a delicious and satisfying food especially the steak 🥩 so tender and juicy, it was really good,I love it!

  • It’s always great when you find a good steakhouse as they vary so much in quality these days. This sounds like a wonderful restaurant option to enjoy a meal with just the husband. He would probably join me in ordering an 8oz filet mignon. That has to be our favourite dish alongside chips and vegetables of course. I would be ordering something off that cocktail menu. Hearing you enjoyed the food and service so much does inspire me to pop in when we next get the opportunity.

  • Eating in a courtyard surrounded by old stone walls feels much more relaxed than a typical dining room. That century old vibe adds plenty of character!

  • It sounds like a fantastic restaurant. The lamb chops look especially delicious with those perfect grill marks.

I haven’t tried Don Julio 1942 Añejo yet, but I’ll definitely take your recommendation and give it a try if I get the chance to visit. Places like this truly deserve a spot on anyone’s itinerary.

  • The location and setting are beautiful. I’m always impressed by restaurants that have maintained their reputation for years because quality food is not always consistent over time. Chefs come and go!
I don’t eat meat, but I can appreciate quality foods. Good for them and here’s to many more years of success!

  • The food looks delish, especially now that I am hungry. And an amaretto sour, too funny that was my drink in the late 80s.
